i was staggered to hear how many millions ray ranson accumulated.

Wasn't Rays last few years at City dominated (and also Nicky Reid's) with squabbling with John Bond about his wages? Was there something going on in the early 1980's about the home-grown lads being kept on bad contract terms when we were skint, while new buys getting a lot more? I remember Joe Corrigan saying Kaziu Deyna was on tuppence happeny when we joined (I can't remember but about 1/5 of Joe's wages I think), which suggests the board weren't above pushing their luck on wages where they thought they could. Perhaps Ray Ranson (or was it Ransom - the papers never seemed to decide!) got his thirst for cash from that treatment by Swales.... or was just an avaricious bas'''d to start with.

bert trautmann - first goalkeeper to be man enough to play on in the FA cup final after breaking his neck. you see it all the time these days.

david white - first "jet-heeled" forward to weigh more than one of his own waste reclamation skips full of scrap.

lee bradbury.......
