City players in advanced talks to take wage deferrals

Great to see that we're leading the way during this time.

Players looking at taking a deferral on wages, probably to help the club keep some control over the books in the short term. Likely they'll get it back down the line but fair play to the players.

It is fantastic to see us setting examples of how to behave correctly time and time again.

In all honesty, the players will likely get it back once we’re through this pandemic but it’s good to see we have a decent set of players that are clearly a harmonious group and in it together to agree as a unit.

You need strong leaders within for them all to come together on something like this so it’s brilliant to see we’re the first despite losing probably the most influential leader in the league in Vinny. Couldn’t ask for a better set of leaders than Silva, Fernandinho, Aguero and KDB.

Not just City but professional football as a whole, many players are “self employed”. As Clubs hold the registration under contract (hence the players are assets of the club) clubs are obliged to pay them in full ( hence deferral). If clubs don’t pay then it’s breach of contract or force majeure which would nullify the contract and the club loses the asset and that could be millions.

Times also have the story (behind a paywall):

That is a different 'story' to the one quoted by @Ric in the media thread where the lizard Lawton uses Mega Rich and other derogatory comments, has he changed it due to comments from Blues ?

Footballers are classed as employees, and their contractual income is taxed under PAYE. Things such as image rights may be treated under a separate schedule of tax, but they are treated no differently to key employees in any other organisations. They are not self employed.

Removed my tweet, not giving him the publicity after seeing that.

That’s why I put self employed in quotations, but it doesn’t take away from the contracts being club assets, so if they refuse the reduction the club would be in breach of contract
