City Players Who 'Liked a Pint'

Can't believe no-ones mentioned Tony Coton yet... he missed many a Saturday game due to sudden ''stomach upsets''

"Hardest man to ever play for City"

Modern day AJ & MJ - what a waste of talent if true.

I think Roy Paul was the player who used to go into the Lord Lion before a game and sup 4 pints.

We often said that Bobby Johnstone, God rest the lad, had a jar or two, but only to swill down the chips.

Will only comment on the ones I know about personally as had a drink with them
Tommy Booth, yes he does like a drink, not sure about when he was playing
Eric Nixon, see him at his family weddings, he has a drink but a lot less than me and the rest of his family. Sure he is invited to the same wedding as me Friday so will keep an eye out.
Stan Bowles, likes a pint but is no way a heavy drinker and never was. Worst card player I have ever seen. Very quiet and a gentleman but forever skint.

Quite correct. Most goalkeepers used to have a bottle of brandy or gin wrapped in the towel they used to keep in the net. Which Gary James book is it that mentions the bar that was just inside the tunnel at Maine Road - at least until the mid 70s - where players could pop and pull a pint when the trainer was on?

I can't remember mentioning a bar in the tunnel. I do mention players staying at pubs and stuff like that though.

Stuart Taylor and Gaz Baz used to come in the pub I owned. Enjoyed a bottle of Magner's every so often.

Apparently some other of the England lads used to come in to, AJ, SWP but don't know how true that is. They all stopped coming in regularly when Bobby took over. Used to see them regularly when MH was in charge...

Haha that cracked me up. I suspect MJ has a problem. I heard Mancini was shocked at most of the English boys and that was one of the reasons he let AJ go as he did not respect his lifestyle.

Nicky Weaver - Governor's House pub in Cheadle Hulme/Bramhall was a haunt of his where he would get smashed out of his skull and say endearing stuff like "do you know who I am?"

Michael Brown - used to go in the Red Lion in Cheadle quite a lot.

I've heard about Weaver in Cheadle Hulme from my friend who lives that way and also Brown was notorious. Proper Scally.

Brownie was ok. Him and Whitley used to go in the Red and they used to have that lad from Bread dj-ing - Billy Boswell? - who was/is a big City fan too.

A gang of us went to Aiya Napa (sp) in '98 and couldn't believe it when we got into the foyer of the apartments we were staying and there was Brownie & Whitley playing pool! Saw quite a few footballers on that jaunt. Andy Cole was there with Michael Thomas - Cole completely blanked my mate who's a big red :D Saw Frank Lampard there too.

Anyway, back on topic...

Uwe enjoyed a pint of Guinness or two - nothing over the top mind - in the Unicorn in Wilmslow. Actually, it was Murphy's as they didn't do Guinness in the Unicorn.

once bumped into mark kennedy and jeff whitley in the ritz and neil mcnab propping up a bar in denton and all 3 were pissed up.
didnt niall quinn once say he was gonna have a pint in every pub in manchester when he played for us.
did he succeed?
