City Signed Mike Summerbee OTD 20/08/65

Haha so have I, I was gifted it as an 'original'.

I always have my doubts.
I do have his genuine autograph in a book he signed along with Tony Book, Dennis Tueart, Barney Daniels, Carl Halford, Bernard Halford, Harry Godwin, Roger Reade, David Davies and the one and only Peter Swales. It was at the Junior Blues Christmas Party in Salford 1976.

What a session with Barney in the Cresent afterwards haha

I can’t remember how many years ago I last had a pint in there but it was a long time ago.

He loved to have banter with fans when taking corners, proper winger I think we played him as a centre forward if my memory servers me right being another foc.

Definitely played centre forward early in 67/8... remember him wearing number 9 and scoring against Forest at Maine Road. (I was a Summerbee obsessive as a lad)

Not sure if he played 9 for City before 67/8.

I first encountered 'Buzzer' that awful, rain soaked day in 1965 when 8015 of us witnessed his Swindon side playing us off the park, our lowest ever ebb until we lost at York in the Third Division many years later.

Then he signed for us with Colin Bell, and later Francis Lee, and we were off up the league, some of the greatest times ever to be a City supporter!

Some time around 1971 there was a Sunday Times poll of all the First Division teams' players asking 'Who are the hardest players in the professional game today?'

All the usual suspects were mentioned (from Nobby Stiles at the Red Filth to Peter Storey at Arsenal to Johnny Morrissey at Everton to the entire Leeds team..)

The 'Top Four' included Jack Charlton, Norman 'Bites Yer Legs' Hunter (both Leeds) and Ron 'Chopper' Harris (Chelsea), all defenders. The only attacker voted into the 'Top Four' by his fellow professionals was Mike Summerbee.

He was fearless, hard as nails. But he was also an incredibly skilful and gifted winger who converted seamlessly to the centre-forward role during the 1967-68 title winning campaign.

I remember how one game at Stamford Bridge, he and 'Chopper' Harris were going at each other all afternoon. After he caught 'Chopper' with a late rake of the studs down his shinpad, 'Buzzer' tapped him on the shoulder and as Harris turned around with clenched fists, 'Buzzer' said (words to the effect of) 'I say Chopper.. do you know you've got a ladder in your tights?'

We all owe Mike Summerbee so much for his contribution to our club, both on and off the field for 60 years. A great player, a great servant, a great man.

Yup. He played at CF until Franny arrived and occasionally after.

I used to work at Manchester liners house in 1986 , we used to play 5 a side after work and someone told me the bloke giving out the equipment was ex city player Barney Daniel’s ? I did not recognise him tbh

I remember once he was given offside and raced over to the Lino with a look of thunder on his face. When he got there he put on a beatific smile and casually walked right round the Lino and back on to the pitch.

Some said as soon as a game kicked off Buzzer ran towards his designated marker and left his calling card. Tough as nails was buzzer as were Franny, TC and Doyly.
I cannot recall the game but there was a game at Maine Road when someone put a foot in on Summerbee and was sent off within seconds of the kick off.

York and Swindon, two great old railway towns; I knew they had to have something else in common.

Good stories, by the way!

I well remember the Everton fans singing "We'll walk a million miles to the end of your nose" and he gestured an enlarged nose with his hand and even they had to laugh. He also received applause from the same crowd when caught offside and he would fetch the ball and return it to the spot where he was caught out. No time wasting then.

I worked for the Ship Canal company at head office in King Street late 1969 to 1972

talk about best ever signings, certainly one of them. Still one of my all time favourites, and still a legendary blue.
Mike was my favourite player throughout his time at City, very much for the aspects of his character to which others have alluded: his skill, tenacity, toughness and, probably above all, his humour. One of the standout matches in our 67/68 league winning season was the ‘Ballet on Ice’ in which Mike amply demonstrated all his qualities. Got his autograph in a signing session at Schofield’s, his (then) wife-to-be Tina’s family sports shop in Ashton when I also noted down his car’s reg (GAD 543D!). Me and my mates spotted him regularly on his way to Mottram where he lived for a while, when he’d stop off at a grocers-cum-off license called Sedgewick’s in Cockbrook, Ashton. It was received wisdom amongst us that he was buying bacon from the joint that was proudly displayed on the shop counter but, looking back, it seems much more likely that his purchases were of the liquid kind! Anyway, a great player, a great servant for City and a great man

Sky hated him for the outburst, but everything Mike forcast came true!! city legend
If I remember correctly he said City had more of the ball, should have won and all Sky were doing was repeating Rooney’s goal. Sky then put up a dodgy stat that United had a lot more possession. A quick google of that match today shows that is not true, a further google search for that part of the outburst can’t be found (if anyone can find it post it please); I wonder why it is so hard to find footage of Sky rebutting Summerbee’s facts with lies???
