City v Arsenal post match thread

I dont think pep's philosophy requires a keeper to play as a sweeper. Neur is just exceptionally gifted and very good at playing that role. He was there before pep tho.
There aren't any other keepers that play the way he does.

Granted its an area of weakness in Joes and Cabelleros game, however I am sure Pep will recognise this an adapt his tactics to suit.

Coaching the midfielders and full backs to provide better short options so our keeper isnt forced in to hoofing it for example. I am sure as the players get used to the new demands put on them. We will see an improvement and joe might even learn how to kick straight!

Having a sweeper keeper moves our team 10m further up the pitch. This provides numerical advantage in midfield while condensing the distance required to press the ball when we lose possession. It is fundamental to Pep's approach to the game. To say we can work around it is to say you don't understand how Pep's teams play.

Why is a 'sweeper keeper' a prerequisite?
Valdes wasn't one at Barca.
This 'sweeper keeper' thing is most Neuer's doing and I don't believe it's a prerequisite.
Valdes was quality with the ball at his feet. That said he wa afforded a lot more time playing for Barca than anyone playing in the Prem would be.

If this is the case, and if we assume that Pep has known for some time that he was taking over from Pellers, it seems surprising that he didn't make finding a more suitable ball-playing replacement for Joe Hart as his top priority.

We've been trying to buy Ter-Stegen since the minute the window opened.

Sweeper keeper? There is only one Manuel Neuer & I don't see any issues with Hart's distribution. Some times he takes longer than he's should, but nothing startling.

For what it's worth I think Hart will stay our number one this season. I'm sure Pep knows there are other areas of the team that need sorting before GK.

I hope Joe knuckles down and works his backside off on the training ground especially his distribution which is just awful imo.

Just give the guy a chance without all this knee jerk shit.

You don't think Pep has enough credibility to deserve at least a few months to see how things are going.

All the fuckin world class internet football coaches on here give me the shits !

Honestly, I don't think it's that - it's just normal football talk. People are bound to look at what we do and speculate on what Pep might be thinking. Then we combine that with rumours of incoming transfers like Stones, or dissatisfaction with Joe Hart etc and ponder stuff.

It's not about people thinking they're world class coaches, but many are paying fans, and a huge part of the sport is people having an opinion on our weaknesses and ways to improve. The game would be utterly dross if we all just turned to watch the match then went home as though we'd watched a movie.
THIS is football - fans talking / arguing about it.

Tbh even if we don't have a 'sweeper keeper' we still need one who isn't an umpa lumpa.

Hart cannot keep hoofing the ball to the opposition or into touch, in a Pep Guardiola team.

He may have been given license to do it short term, until he gets used to the way Pep wants him to play or he may have just ignored Pep & done it anyway. But his first few touches were crap.

If it's he latter, & he has ignored Pep's instructions, he's probably a gonner, very soon. Let's hope that's not he case, but Hamman seemed to have seen something.

The other thing though is 'opportunity'. Even if Joe isn't our weakest link, not by a long shot, if a manager is faced with the opportunity to improve that position, he'll probably take it.
We might also need a CB, but if the opportunity to buy isn't there, despite the greater need, is he going to put a keeper change on hold?
