Anyone know where I can find clips online from this game?
I have to write an article about the greatest side I ever saw and I've decided against doing a City one and instead I'm going for Beardsley, Aldridge, McMahon, Barnes, and Houghton et al.
For a couple of seasons they were other-worldly good but I can't find this match on Youtube or anywhere. Could rely on memory but was a fair few years ago and I was only a kid. Can only remember the heartbreak of being so close to Wembley.
Cant help with the online clips.
This was an eagerly awaited game against the best side in the country at the time. we had the highly rated Lake,Brightwell, Hinchcliffe, White, and Redmond( a scouser) but at the end of the day it turned out to be men against boys. We started off well but it soon became clear we were out of our depth-Liverpool were class that day,and backed by a good away following they taught us a lesson in football.
Standing on the kippax that day it was heartbreaking to see our young talented team torn apart by a class side-i can,t remember one decent chance we created all match. and although we had beaten top sides like Forest and watford in other cup matches that season, this was a step too far. well beaten on the day.
Season 87/88 was a great time in many ways, the 10-1 against huddersfield for example really showed the talent we had from a set of talented local lads, but Liverpool ran out easy winners on the day. our great run in the league cup that year also collapsed at the hands of scousers,Everton beating us 2-nil in the quarter finals at Goodison..still it was a brave effort from a then second division city to march through to the quarter finals of both the domestic cup competitions that season-the whole country was aware of who we were-i was proud to be a blue that year, the boy Lake in particular ensured attention nationwide and Mel Machin should be given credit for his trust in youth and attacking style of play.
It should be noted at this time that we were constantly visited at Maine Road ,on scouting missions by none other than the Liverpool manager Grame Souness and the Forest,s Brian Clough ,such was the quality of our young team.
Its ok for the bin-dippers to harp on today about City having all the money, but in those days we had none. we had to invest in youth,we had no choice, and the "big boys" of merseyside thought it was ok to come calling to watch little old city with a view to picking off our locally produced talent-they had the c heque book power and there was fuck all we could do about it..in football,as in life, times change-i for one feel sick when i hear the scousers moan about our money..they didn,t give a fuck about us when they had it.
Fuck off Liverpool.some of us blues have long memories..respect to you for you domination of english football when you were at the top..have a little grace now that little old city are on the up. spending 35 million quid on a geordie wife beater and being dumped by the kop darling torres shows what a pickle you are in now..look forward to seeing you at the Etihad this season.
