I'm pretty sure that's net spend. In terms of outright spend, not including any mitigating money received, I make it (and it's quite approximate) City - £477.1m, Liverpool - £238.1m, ratio - very close to 2:1

Our gross spend is double what theirs is over the last 5 years. However, you also have to take into account what the value of their squad was in 2008 compared to ours.

To use an analogy, if I've got a battered old car and then spend £30k to get a new BMW and someone else has a nice car and only has to spend £15k to get a similar, new BMW, I've spent more but we've got the same outcome. In the seasons before the Sheikh bought us, they massively outspent us.
