City v Newcastle, Carling Cup - Post Match Thread

Heard St Helens Blue telling it as it is to Shaun Goater on the GMR post match phone in, and he was right - we lose our key creative player for the derby, for zero gain.
I tried to keep calm mate and not rant ala talkshite

What the hell has happened. Start of the season I thought the signings we made would be shrewd business (ignoring Mangala's fee) and would compliment our squad. With Jovetic/Aguero back to fitness and Silva looking as good as ever, I thought we would have another strong campaign in all competitions.

The truth is we have lost our spark, and that has to come from both the players and manager. I always believe you should have a settled back line especially the keeper and 2 centre half's. His persistence with 4-4-2 is baffling to say the least and we have had no continuity in midfield. Fernando is struggling to hit the ground running and Fernandinho has gone backwards since the world cup. Yaya is playing below par and believe it or not has been bullied and out muscled in a few games

We are getting complacent BUT the one thing which gripes me is not having the hunger/desire. These last few games we have been bullied and are second to most balls. He has to start putting numbers in the midfield, we are getting over run time and time again. GET A GRIP STARTING SUNDAY with or without Silva.

Silva and Kun should have been sat at home with their feet up and two younger/EDS players should have been on instead. And now Silva has an injury!

It's not so much that we lost and went out; we won the comp last year, it isn't on Soriano's list for "five trophies in five years", we didn't particularly have to win tonight...we do have to have a good defence to our Prem title and show progression in Europe over progressing in the FL Cup this year.

However I would at least expect some effort and application, but nobody apart from Demichelis played well and barely any of them tried that hard at all.

Awful. AWFUL!

I don't really know where to start. You can discuss systems, personnel etc but there seems to be a collective wrongness about us at the moment. The starting line up looked very strong (I was surprised to see Silva and look how that turned out) but as a team we were shocking. Defensively, we are a shambles and going forward we are predictable. So easy to play against - get men behind the ball when needed and break well when in possession: that's all they needed to do to beat us. I'm sure we will come back fighting but we're out of one competition, up against it in Europe and we don't have much room for error in the league. We started indifferently last season and came good and a thumping win on Sunday will hopefully get us back on track. If we shit it on Sunday, then our season starts to really unravel. The pressure is on.

I felt like one team came to try to win, the other came thinking they had won. It is remarkable how often this team is overconfident to a fault, so assured that they can fall asleep at the wheel. This is why I wished we had a couple youth players in the squad, not only would they actually try but the players around them would know they needed to be on their game too.

We were arrogant, got everything we deserved. I'm fuming.

No biggie.

The criticism from this will spur us on.. everyone will be like poor City, and Lucky RAG's after getting a flukey 90th minute winner last game - karma determines we should smash them and have our moment in the sun to dine out on.

Was listening to the radio commentary and reading the match thread during the game (wasn't that a bundle of fun). Only just seen the videos of the goals we conceded.

When you carry on for 3 years signing average players sooner or later it will take its affect.

The following players would struggle to holda regular spot in any top 3 team in the top leagues the way they are playing at the moment -

Cabellero, Sagna, Mangala ( to soon really to judge), Cliche, Kolorov, Fernadinho, Fernando, Navas, Milner, Nasri Dzeko and Jovetic

The players who have kept us up there are - Hart, Zab, Komps Yaya, Silva and Aguero.

Until we sign players on their level we will never improve. They have had no real competition for 4 seasons now. Considering how much we have spent since we first won the league we are really no better.

Kompany has been below par for me this season. And I've also no idea why you've included Nasri in there, but overall I agree, you're spot on

Nasri was the last name i added to the list he's probably norder line he either great or awful. I wouldn't criticise him tonight as he probably wasn;t quite ready. Kompany not playing as well but I think that comes down to frustration with the performances - he sometimes just tries to hard.

Managers like parses have no option but to maximise their effectiveness by shrewd tactics with 100% effort. With our players and this mix you have a bayern or barca. Without the former you simply have what we got tonight, disjointed and care-less attitude= easily beaten by less skilful players
