i'll start by admitting i have faith in Bony but only cos i never write players off until they're given a very fair crack whilst fit;
Bony played well with faults. Some great hold up play & strength (naturally!) and surprising skill with the ball at feet. Some of his short game and interlinking is impressive for a striker. He scored a very good header, his build up and especially movement for the 2nd were fantastic and his position all evening was a big plus. On one occasion he brought the ball down 20 yds out surround by 4 players and still forced the keeper into a save low down in the corner.
Negatively, he missed an absolute sitter and had 2 or 3 occasions when he hit a dribbler of a shot instead of a decent whack from a huge grown man. He tailed off quite dramatically in the run up to his substitution.
So, many think he played badly and yet he scored and should have had a hattrick. Contrast this to the De Bruyne thread; the ginger prince scored as well but arguably played poorly, his passing was all over the place in the 1st half, but has nothing but plaudits and praise. Personally i think they both deserve praise but Bony seems to be a marked man.
Thanks for that, Shemnel. An informative, balanced post. I entirely agree with your first sentence, by the way. The players who can come in and make a major impact from the first game are few and far between. Sergio did it, of course, and KDB looked very comfortable, immediately. But I don't remember Vinny being the major presence that he has now grown into, right from the off. And Zab was downright poor in certain matches, at the beginning. Some players just need time. Bony did not have that time, until now, but he's getting it, and he won't get opportunities like this very often, for obvious reasons. If Nacho is in on Saturday, and then again for Sevilla, you might as well say to Bony, "Pack your bags for January, mate". That would be the message. Some on here wouldn't care about that. I think it would be vastly premature, myself. Of course, we can play them both, and rest, say, Yaya and KDB, with Ferny back in (it was a one-match suspension, I believe) and Navas from the start. Navas is in fact having his best season since 2013-14.
That would give you a team along the lines of this: Hart, Sagna, Kompany, Otamendi/Mangala, Kolarov, Fernando, Fernandinho, Sterling, Bony, Iheanacho, Navas. That rests the necessary players for next Wednesday, takes no risks with rushing players back before they're fully and completely fit, and it's still a pretty bloody terrifying team, with tons of goals in it.
