People used to say we couldn't attract the top names because our club had no standing. But look at Monaco right now... promoted from the French 2nd division and signing Falcao, Moutinho, Rodriguez, with more to follow. I reckon with the correct manager (a bigger name than Hughes) and a director of football we could have taken football by storm earlier and bypassed the whole 'mid-grade players on huge wages' stage.

It's different situation..

Monaco is almost guaranteed to qualify for Champions League with such signings and might even win the league if everything goes right as PSG looks bit unstable with losing Ancelotti and maybe even Ibrahimovic. And they have very "interesting" tax laws back there in Monaco ;)

City was in the league with established European elite and it was harder to attract players on the beginning.

There were some shit signings though.

Didn't someone say that if yer play in the French league you have to pay French taxes.

Who gives a fuck? It's history. We're still fucking rich.

Nail on head. We are competing with the big boys, something i never thought we would do and constantly be linked with players like Sidwell or Mido and players coming to the end of their career ala Seaman, Mills and Cole.

I love it.

Look at it the other way too ....

Hart costs 1m how much is he worth now ? ......
If we sold the following we would make a profit ....

Zabba, Kompany, Nasty, Clichy, Yaya, Silva, Aguero
I doubt anyone would pay more than £24m for a 30 year old midfielder.

but he has been with us for 3 years, so his book value will be more like £9M

I believe French players playing for Monaco have to pay full French taxes, but foreign players don't.

Again we have fans who know little of what the view from within the club is or was telling us what we should have done. Mark Hughes' record in the transfer market was disastrous at QPR in a way it was not at City. Robinho was not bought primarily for what he was to do on the pitch, Jo wasn't his "fault" but Zaba, Vinnie, NdJ and Barry were excellent value and Lescott, though admittedly overpriced has been a key member of a miserly back four. I think Adebayor and Santa Cruz were fairly disastrous, but most of the other buys (apart from Bridge!) weren't. Roberto did well in the market at least until last August, but i think that was a fairly complicated club cock up but the players brought in are good squad players, and Rodwell and Nastsic are much more than that - but we didn't get the stellar names we craved.

I think tax rates and location were, maybe still are, important factors in player choice. In the early days, though, City did have a credibility gap. In 2008 David Villa was attracted by offers from the new City owners, but they couldn't guarantee that other players of similar quality would arrive at the same time. This was at the end of the season which had seen the first, and so far only, all English CL final. England regularly got 3 teams to the semis of the CL - the SAME three teams. We had the top four set in stone with Spurs and Villa the most likely to break in if any club did. City were stuck firmly in mid table at best - with a mountain to climb. When all this is taken into account the number of "duds" bought doesn't compare badly with other "top" clubs.

Have any of you been to Monaco?

I am partly from Manchester and I honestly would have to think about it long and hard if given the choice between Monaco and the north of England.

There are other benefits to transferring there.

32 million for Robinho
24 million for Lescott
18 million for RSC
17 million for Kolarov

who the fuck did our negotiating

Statement of intent accounted for the Robinho signing. we are in a different place now, don't forget I remember when Hughes was in charge that first Christmas we were in the bottom three in the league.

How can you be partly from Manchester?

Almost all 3rd party owned which is banned in England

We would have simply bought full rights as we did from Tevez's third party owners, would we not?
