Nah. Sounds like he was a fanny that was perfectly happy to let others do his duty for him. There's never been a more just war than 39-45. The systematic extermination of Jews, disabled, Slavs, homosexuals and just about anyone else that didn't fit the Aryan Nazi ideal.
It makes me proud there were people like my grandfather who was unlucky enough to be in the British 11th Armoured Division and was one of the poor blokes who discovered Belsen. That such places existed at all justified the war, whatever people such as grandfather said. You mention receiving a pathetic response, it's not pathetic at all, if the rest of the country was as 'hard, principled and strong' as your grandfather then we'd all be speaking German and there wouldn't be a Jew left in Europe.
I can understand a young fella having his arse arse handed to him by the fascists in Spain and not fancying anymore war as his arse had gone, but dressing up his avoidance of duty is such florid terms as 'objecting on the grounds is a capitalist war' is beyond a joke.
