Civil war in Spain?

Nah. Sounds like he was a fanny that was perfectly happy to let others do his duty for him. There's never been a more just war than 39-45. The systematic extermination of Jews, disabled, Slavs, homosexuals and just about anyone else that didn't fit the Aryan Nazi ideal.

It makes me proud there were people like my grandfather who was unlucky enough to be in the British 11th Armoured Division and was one of the poor blokes who discovered Belsen. That such places existed at all justified the war, whatever people such as grandfather said. You mention receiving a pathetic response, it's not pathetic at all, if the rest of the country was as 'hard, principled and strong' as your grandfather then we'd all be speaking German and there wouldn't be a Jew left in Europe.

I can understand a young fella having his arse arse handed to him by the fascists in Spain and not fancying anymore war as his arse had gone, but dressing up his avoidance of duty is such florid terms as 'objecting on the grounds is a capitalist war' is beyond a joke.
You have to understand that attitude in the context of the times. My guess would be that the person was a member of the Communist Party and, with the signing of the pact between the Soviet Union and Germany in 1939, the Soviets had to exercise some mental gymnastics to explain how their sworn enemy was now their best friend. The notion of a "capitalist war" was the result and many Party members bought it without demur. In addition, the Soviet Union was seen very differently in those days than it later came to be after the war when Stalin's worst excesses became known. That's why so many intellectual English people were convinced that the USSR was some sort of paradise and how the KGB managed to recruit people like the Cambridge & Oxford spy rings. Those people were patriotic, Establishment figures who genuinely believed that helping the USSR was th best thing they could do for their own country.

If you concentrated more on what you read and less on your trolling you would see it wasn't my granddad. Furthermore I never said WW2 was any less a worth cause than the Spanish Civil War and just for the record one of my granddad's was captured at Dunkirk the other went through the desert campaign, Italy and up into Germany

This isn't the Brexit thread it's a thread about Catalan independence so I'll agree to disagree and carry on regardless. However the rise of nationalism is in part a response to the EU and it's going to get a hell of a lot worse before it gets better.

If EU interests match those of the member nations, then it's OK with EU apparatchiks, but when national interests don't align with the interests of the EU then we see the real colours of European politicians. France would not agree to anything that disadvantaged their farmers, German manufacturers would not put EU political shenanigans ahead of a healthy corporate balance sheet!

Fucker still didn't join up when the Motherland was invaded did he. Nope, he was just a fairy letting others do their bit for him and every other European. It's not as he'd have done well post German invasion if he was a member of the communist party is it.

Shouldn't we support the Catalans by sending them guns and money so they can overthrow the government?
I think they have olive oil rather than fuel oil so we won't get involved.

One report earlier in the week said Catalans get less local power than Basques which is part of their grievance,
