It would cause major problems for the countries most dependent on Russian gas but not as big a problem as would be experienced by the Russian economy of which a huge chunk relies on exporting gas to Europe.

Yep. The only question will be whether it changes from a Russian proxy war to a direct war between Ukraine and Russia. Russia’s involvement with the separatists in terms of supplying materiel and manpower is such that arguably it’s already happened. The question now is whether they make it official, stop the subterfuge and ramp it up.
