CL R16 | Gladbach | 24/02 A - 16/03 H

Salah was offside for their first goal. He was the only player in our half when the ball is played to him, right in front of the liner. Jesus' goal at Anfield to make it 3-1 was incorrectly ruled offside. But hey I'm not bitter
Early 2H at Etihad - we are still 1-0 up. Firmino on a yellow card, blatantly pulls back KDB. No second card - not even a foul. Firmino then scores about 2 mins later.

Jesus wasn’t offside at Anfield when he scored neither. That would have given us an away goal.

We should also have had a penalty on two occasions when DSilva and then Sterling were brought down in the second half, both from cutting the ball back and having their legs swept from under them.

Milner also hand balled it in the second leg at our place.

I’ve got no problem with the Spurs ones at the Etihad, as, by the rules, they were both correct (it didn’t go directly in off Llorrente’s arm, it hit his hip after his arm; and Agüero was offside)... but you’re correct about the penalty at their place.
First, that's still handball. Second that was never the reason given. The ref supposedly didn't see the angle showing the ball clearly hitting his arm

Little Berti was still very much The Man at MG, but Netzer had been swept up by Bayern although they were nowhere as powerful then as they later became. Heynckes was in his first stint as manager. Keegan went to Hamburg and Dave Watson to Bremen. Sometimes we went down the road to see Woodcock but Koln was easy to get to but a bugger to find the way out of.
We used to get our tickets from the Post Office so easy compared with the famous Manchester City ticket office.
The last time Borussia played us and it was cancelled because of a deluge someone l know couldn't get to the match the following night but the club would not refund him. I just thought l would mention it as recent events have meant no opportunity to criticise them.

Netzer went from Gladbach to Real Madrid 1973 and played there 3 years together with Breitner who went from Bayern to Real. Vicente del Bosque was their main partner in midfield. After his career Netzer went to Hamburg as manager from 78 to 86 when Hamburg won 3 Bundesliga Championships and the European Cup.

Netzer was before my time as a player and l have lived under the misapprehension he went to Bayern for a long time, just had the wrong twats in mind. He was a legend in MG and the national team and was part of a statue with Berti and another player in the city.
Hamburg and Bayern were despised in NRW and more widely a bit like the rags and Liverpool here and perhaps for the same reasons.

Good draw, we should be getting through

this year looks like the most challenging CL ever.

If the favorites go through we’re likely to have an incredibly tough draw in the QF one from:

-Bayern
-Atletico
-Livarpool
-Juve
-PSG
-Dortmund
-Real
Dortmund currently in a bit of a pickle, so let's have them.

I remember seeing a photo at the time of Netzer practising free kicks with one of those dummy barriers at 10 yds. The story underneath was:
Wow, those Germans eh? We in England were miles behind. Netzer a great player.

We had a pub team and we used play other local pubs. Most had mainly German players but some were the haunts of the Guest Workers mainly from across Southern Europe and even the pub players were fast skilful and intelligent. The Germans we used to liken to pinball machine, the balls fizzing all over with the players calling 'hier, hier, hier'. So bloody efficient and skilful, even at that level.
We brits used to be so snobbish about football even though we had been taught a lesson years before by a little fat man who just ambled around. I've always found it a shame that there were so few clips of Puskas playing.

Not by the hand ball law (don’t know if it’s changed this season).

It was only hand ball if it goes into the net directly from the arm, or if it hits a players arm and then he has a shot or sets up a teammate for a shot.

A deflection off his arm then his hip wasn’t handball. And is exactly why Jesus’ goal against them in the league last season should have stood as Laporte neither scored directly from his arm, nor did he shoot or set up Jesus after it hitting his arm. And exactly why we should have had a penalty at Anfield last season, because the ball deflecting off Bernardo’s arm didn’t matter before Alexander-Arnold’s handballed it.
