It certainly wasn’t the easiest thing to do, making the trip to Manchester Tuesday night. Take aside the financial side of things (Wembley isn’t cheap as I’m sure you all know!!), the prospect of facing the team that has just beaten you in an FA Cup Final, on their own turf, just 3 days later was a bit of a daunting thought.
We knew we’d be depleted with knocks to key players (I almost brought an Abacus with me to keep score) and the thought of having our noses rubbed in it made me consider giving it a wide berth.
I have to say though, you lot showed a heck of a lot of class. I bumped into quite a few Man City fans after the game on Saturday and pretty much each and every one was graceful in defeat and didn’t try and rub it in or mock us one bit. I ended up shaking hands with quite a few and congratulating them (the better team did win on the day) and wishing them all the best for next season and the Champions League.
Don’t get me wrong, we shouldn’t get too luvvy-duvvy on this as banter is a massive part of the game for me, there’s nothing better than having a good craic between opposing sets of fans, but at the same time its great to have a mutual respect and the knowledge that win, lose or draw, you can share a drink or a natter after the match without fear of any trouble.
Saturday was massively disappointing to lose but that quickly passed with a feeling of immense pride of my team. You outplayed us at our own game, you worked hard, won all the second balls and all the battles; basically you out-stoked us and deserved to win. I stayed ‘til the very end and watching you lot celebrate as Tevez and co. lifted the trophy, one by one, hurt like nothing I’ve ever felt at a Football match before.
Of course, in the cold light of day, when we reflect on what we’ve achieved this season we realise we’ve had a great campaign and we’ve got a new adventure to look forward to next season in Europe.
Anyway, just wanted to say you were a credit to your club on both Saturday and Tuesday and showed a heck of a lot more class than most other clubs we come across.
All the best for next season.
PP.
