The word "class" irritates me too.

I've heard Man United fans describing their support as having "Class", or other fanbases as having "No class".

It's the most ridiculous, meaningless word in football.

Is it a bastardisation of the "world class" or "different class" thing?

I think their fanbase is world class to be honest.

I can see where your coming from in that the overuse of the word class maybe a deliberate technique to paint a subliminal picture of City as an arrogant nouveau riche behemoth that is restricting equality in football etc etc.

In truth though, the defence splitting pass from Johnson to put Nasri through for his goal was described as sheer unadulterated class, and it was, quite clearly at that moment Johnson was in a different league of quality (it does mean something in the context of quality) than the wolves players around him.

You start a semantic debate about the use of the word class and then suggest delicious as an alternative...?

In terms of size you could just about shoehorn the term in there.

But they have used it to describe the actions of their fanbase. Which, bearing in mind it consists largely of follow-the-crowd thick fuckers, stupid kids and middle class business men , is rather laughable.

My great-great-grandfather would have called us Ardwick FC, but I would say he was a City fan, if he was into football, but I don't know if he was. I get your point, but times change, the only time Citizens is ever referred to as our nickname is in Wikipedia, and therefore it's become common global knowledge that it is still our nickname, because we don't have another one that's unique. Outside Manchester, at least. I used to think we were called the "sky blues" until I found out about Coventry City

We were for a time known as the 'sky blues' but (if my memory serves me correctly) Coventry City changed their strip (from all-white I think) to sky blue and we dropped our use of it
