Clive Wilson

I remember harbouring similar thoughts about the deal and thinking that Ken Bates had pulled a fast one on Swales, probably because Chelsea couldn't afford to pay for Wilson until the Summer

I don't recall any abuse for Wilson, but then again, it was in the middle of some depressing performance, results, and post match demonstrations: totally alien to the younger City fans who've not seen us finish out of the Top Four for fifteen years
It’s wasn’t sustained or especially widespread, or abusive for that matter. It was simply wider frustration at the way the season had gone, but I distinctly remember it happening.

It was when we were losing in a home game and he touched the ball on the left hand side, towards the Kippax, so we were playing towards the Platt Lane.

Looking at the fixtures just now I’d say it was Southampton or Watford at home in April as we had a bit of a rally in May including beating Arsenal 3-0 at home. We did play (and lose to) Chelsea at home in mid March but I think that was well before the transfer deadline. And I think March was too soon in the season for the sense of doom to completely take over and the crowd to boo in that way.

Don’t doubt Bates will have pulled a fast one on Swales. Intellectually they were not evenly matched!

I can't recall Power recieving abuse , he always seemed like one of our more reliable players back in the day ..... Bowyer was definitely a target of the boo boys though.
Unfortunately, I remember Paul Power getting stick from the Kippax.
Don't think he wanted to move to Everton either. Didn't he go on to captain Everton when they last won the League as well ?

Paul left our June pre-season training camp to join Everton, who had agreed to pay his due City owed loyalty bonus as part of the deal to get the transfer over the line as Chairman Peter Swales, who promised him a free transfer, then demanded a fee from Everton to cover Paul's loyalty bonus.

Power was due the bonus on July 1st 1986 but Swales refused to pay it if he left for Everton some four days earlier !!!

It was a great move for Paul and he ended up with a First Division title medal the season we went down.

Loved Clive as a player, sad when he left and he went on to have a great career in the top flight at Chelsea, Spurs and QPR. We had become a selling club though.
His stooping header at Old Trafford and the winner v. Liverpool on Boxing Day will always stick in my memory.
Just remember him being called ‘Chelsea’ in the Kippax at the end of that season rather than getting abuse.

Christ, 40 years? I can still picture that Boxing Day goal against Liverpool.

For some reason, my dad got tickets for the Main Stand and we were high up but directly in line with Clive nodding in at the Platt Lane end.

Know his brother Gus, used to train us at City in the Community with Ralph, top blokes too.
Played with Gus. Decent player too

I just remember the home game after we'd lost 5-1 at Fulham

Nothing like the persistent abuse for Bowyer but he was definitely scapegoated for a short while

Crikey, I was at that Fulham game, what a disaster that was ..... I'd enjoyed a lovely stroll in the nearby park beforehand and was feeling quite content with life, but back then you could always rely on City to ruin your day, lol !

I remember Bowyer and Power receiving abuse, but not Wilson, as he was always perceived as one of our more skilful players

And yet Bowyer scored a goal every four games for us on ratio .. and then spends eight years at Forest where he nets a goal every five games, and they appear to think he's half decent!

Extremely gifted footballer. Used to love watching him play, He was superb in midfield early in the 1984-85 season and got injured (along with half the rest of the squad) as our promotion charge stuttured.
Remember he had really funny shaped calf muscles, and I used to shove tennis balls down back of my socks to replicate them!!

I remember being on a night shift back in the day, playing Chelsea away.

There was no access to radio/TV etc, to find out how the game was going on or the result at full time.

I had to wait for the morning papers to come out to find out how we'd done. I think we'd beaten them 2-1 or 2-0 and Clive had scored.

I was sad to see him leave the club to join Chelsea.

One of my favourite players as a kid, was gutted when we sold him, was it £250,000? Was a lot in them days
I recall at the time thinking that he was probably the only player we had that would attract a transfer fee even close to that much.

I always had it in my head that Mick sold for 1/2th and Clive sold for 1/3rd of a £M.

Mick definitely sold for more based on what was published around that time, he technically sold a few months after Clive.

Clive, what a player for us at that time. Bumped into him a couple of times and just before he left us, I spoke to him said "gutted you are leaving us and he will probably play for England now". That's what I thought would happen.

I recall thinking it, I didn't say that I recall being correct.

(married for thirty+ years and have two daughters...accepting that I am wrong is my default setting)
