I understand your point about one localised icon, the problem is Manchester doesn't have one architecturally or graphically that could come anywhere near to competing with New York or Paris.
The closest thing the city has to an iconic graphic is the Manchester worker bee. I love that as an icon, and being from the Northern Quarter I'm suee you will have noticed every independent cafe / bar that seems to have opened in the last 3 years has got a graphical reference to the Manchester Bee. It's everywhere now and is almost becoming over used.
The next best graphic we've got is the shield with the ship and 3 rivers. It's all over the city, and while it might not be world famous (yet) it has a huge amount of local significance. And afterall, isn't that the business model of CFG? Global reach, local identity?
We could squeeze in an iconic symbol, a lion, a horse, an eagle, whatever, but if there is no local significance, what's the point? I understand the idea of having one iconic symbol, but if Manchester doesn't have one, it would be silly to try and force it and invent one.
We are where we are with regards to Manchester and it's iconography, we can only use what is available to us. All things considered, the shield with the boat and 3 rivers is the best option we've got.
For information only; the Stockport viaduct is the largest in Europe with 11 million bricks. I wouldn't want it anywhere near the shirt just letting you know there is an historic landmark.
