Club Brugge (H) - CL - Post-Match Thread

For this game, happiest for Sterling for his goal. Can see from the celebration that it meant a lot for the others for Sterling to score that because Sterling himself wasn’t that elated for the goal.

Confidence player who’s lacking some self belief or demotivated by something that happened off the field. But after he scored there were clear glimpses of the Sterling that scored 20 in a season.

I’ll play him before Grealish at this point. Grealish needs time to figure out his role in this team and he can try that out in less volatile games. I’ll start Sterling for the derby.
Not sure about the 'hugging the left touchline' position Grealish is being played in. He should be the number 10 position as per Maddison at Leicester. He ain't no Sane. Imo he should be sticking his arse out just outside the box resulting in dangerous free kicks.

I was surprised to see loads of Bruges suppoerers in the home area. They were obviosly part of an official group as they travelled on the same plane as the team. One of the group was a Cercle Brugge fan who came along for the ride. They were decent lads. They bought me beer before the match.

I had 5/6 young Asian lads set next to me in place of the usual season card holders.
It's just what is needed, new blood to replace us older legacy fans.
I don’t worry about that legacy stuff mate. Danny Wilson supports Bolton for starters.

Yes we certainly need some fresh fans to lift the atmosphere as well as keeping the die hards.

Yes, I was surprised he didn’t come off the touch line, especially when Cancelo driving towards the edge of their box and he would have put Jack clean through if Grealish had moved 10 yards in field

Think we saw the same kind of game as the last few, still think we struggle to create big chances as long as the opposition dont try to score (which is how most games are for us). I dont have that feeling like I used to have, that feeling its just a matter of time before we score. If Mahrez would not have scored that chance, there is a big chance this game could have ended 1-1. But he did, and that all that matters in the end.
Big + to Sterling this game, I had basically given up on him ever finding form for us again, but this was his best performance of the season for me. Maybe there is still a chance? Hope so!

I don't think we have a best front three.

We have a front five from Grealish, Sterling, Foden, DeBruyne, Bernardo, Mahrez, Jesus and Gundogan where most players can play two or three different positions.
If they're all at their best it's very difficult to choose three of them not be in the team so it's down to current form where decisions have to be made.
On current form Foden and Bernardo are first on the list.
Grealish and Jesus are next.
Can't decide my fifth.

the old cliche of a nice problem to have springs to mind

grealish out wide on the left seems pointless unless its something pep wants to work gaps around the box. also if you play that wide you need somebody to run off you or play a quick one two. but grealish was just trying to beat the fullback and the first centre back as the cover and did find it hard

its funny that we miss david silva so much and he was great at linking people up and controlling the game.
the balance of this city team is all over the place and pep's setup and the false 9 really is a puzzle to watch.
the truth is any of the front 5 can be anywhere on the pitch and stops the other team man marking

grealish needs to find a little trick if he can ? playing out wide you need that bit of something else to stop them doubling up on you when you cut back ? the reverse flick is a good trick with your foot and sends both the defenders the wrong way and your in

He will be a stalwart of the side in the near future I believe.
A very assured player with the confidence to take responsibility for passes/shots.
A future leader imo.
Clearly a very promising player.

I love the way he looks like he’s just woke up the morning after a 3 day wild one in Amsterdam.

Another team came to sit deep and play on the counter but City' were much more "City like" than against Palace. Bruge's equaliser took the wind out of our sails for a while and we were always more vulnerable to counters than we should have been, but last night we attacked the space behind the deep back line and were playing the clever balls through the channels and we had lads in the box waiting to profit. Foden and, obviously, Cancelo were excellent in exploiting this space and three of our goals were typical City goals - lethal strikes from 3 yards, the kind of goal Raheem used to score by the bucket full, the ones that drove the scousers mad. Finally a word for John Stones who reminded us all that he also adds to the team by his ability to run into and through midfield and then distributes the ball well.

The most often used pass of Grealish is the 4 oclock pass. Unfortunately it is useless

Nice to see Sterling get a goal at last. Gundogan looks off it at the moment, probably not fully fit after his injury.

Loads of strangers in South level 3.
Easy to spot as they were all moving about after sitting in the wrong row.
i spoke to a few as i did v leipzig
managed to ask a group in the lift going up to ss3 ,how much they had paid
a student villa fan laughed and said £12
less than my ticket on the cup scheme.

Has anyone mentioned how good the ref was last night? I was fully expecting to be down to 9 men by half time. I thought he was actually half decent after the shower we usually get AND how poor he has been to us in the past.

Apart from blowing the whistle bang on 45:00 when we were attacking their area (despite 2 goals which should have been at least a minute of ET), the non-foul on Bernie which should have been a booking for them, the cheap foul gainst us that that followed breaking up a promising attack, and the numerous times (too many to be a coincidence) he blocked our passing lanes?

Subtle interventions in isolation, but these are the things that can and do change the outcome of games.
