Club unveil training ground in Ilkay Gundogan’s name

I think (happy to be corrected) that this is the third training pitch we’ve named in honour of a player - Joe Hart, YaYa and now Ilkay.
I wonder what the criteria is for a statue rather than this? Obviously the statue is a much bigger deal - I think length of service must play a part in the decision in addition to (particularly in the case of YaYa) various other intangibles.

Can Yaya have a statue? I'm sure it's been said as he's Muslim he cannot.

He should be up there with Vinny, Sergio and Silva regardless of pissing off the club.

I've got a funny feeling we've not seen the back of Silky at our club. I just think maybe he'll become a top coach and end up here one day. Just strikes me as someone very intelligent and all what he's learned from Pep he could put into practice. Watch this space.

He's already doing his Pro coaching badges and when he was still with us he took a few coaching sessions with the U-18's.

My mates son currently plays for the U-18'S and said he was brilliant. Gave the Lads some excellent insight in not just coaching but also what it takes to be a top level footballer.

After the coaching session he always stuck around and if the lads had any questions he would sit down and talk to them.

He's going to make an excellent coach and I can definitely see him coming back here in some capacity

Takes more than being good at football to get a statue.

Yaya fails to meet that bar on so many counts. Which is a shame but his own doing.

Sergio Aguero
Fernandinho
Vincent Kompany
David Silva

It looks like there are 16 training pitches.

Thanks for that. I remember Fernandinho having one now you mention it.
But I didn’t realise that the statue recipients also have pitches. No complaints about that - they’re all more than worthy of it.

Yeah, I suppose I thought it would be either/or.

Surely KDB, Walker, Bernardo, Ederson, Rodri have already aren’t at least a pitch each too.

Can’t wait for the Bell, Lee, Summerbee statues to go up.

Statues seem to be granted to 10 year + elite players. Personal opinion is that seems about right.
I love Gundo as much as the next fan but he chose, whether our fault or not, to move on. In my mind a legend forever but a training pitch will do just fine.
