Coal fire advice

As others have said, a few bits of scrumpled up newspapers (not the one you have used after the bog though), a few sticks (or dried bark if you can get it) on top, then a layer of coal (or for a quicker fire doubles), open the bottom of the fire and make sure there is good ventilation and wait for a while for ethe fire to take hold, then build it up a bit.
15 minutes before bed, put a layer of slack on top and close top and bottom of the fireplace and you will have a nice warm room in the morning, just open the bottom again, rake a poker through it and put on more coal, turf, wood or peat.

and its 999 in case of any problems while you sleep

As long as you have a decent fireguard and have the fire well slacked in there will be no problems, have been slacking in the fire for years now & never a problem.

Anything that burns is fair game pal. so a few of these

are fair game and you can just tip the contents of the recycling bin onto that pyre too.

Frees up the bin for summer when it'll be hopefully filled with water keeping your bottles of beer nice and cool.

Nothing better than a nice bonfire in the back garden on a summers evening :)

we've got a traditional fireplace. Above where the fire sits is a moveable metal 'bit'.
Its decorative and hinged at the top, so the bottom bit can be moved in and out.
bear with me cos I know I'm not explaining this very well.

From what you have said, i THINK you are referring to the bit of metal that decides where the heat goes, if you have a back boiler, then if this is left open (ie the metal bit pushed back then the heat and the flames will be to the front of the chimney, if pulled forward, then more of the heat will go up the chimney and heat the water).
A couple of years ago my central heating was on the blink and I couldnt afford to get it fixed, so took the lagging off the water heater, opened the door of it and placed my bed in the room it was in, so the fire heated the water and the water heated the bedroom.<br /><br />-- Thu Nov 28, 2013 8:52 pm --<br /><br />

Poor form to have filmed (and uploaded) a 40 second clip of a burning fire without so much as chucking a red shirt on, grilling a piece of bread or, standing just out of shot and peeing onto it whilst saying "wheyyyy!"

You want to steal pallets for kindling and cut them up, work very well, skips are good or blag them off a local merchant

I'll look, don't use gum tree, just knock on merchants doors, getting free wood is a piece of piss, but stealing it gives my missis the horn so win, win;)
