Cole Palmer

Wonder how all the sales of youth players affected the books from a wage point of view they would have been on decent money here when totaled up most where on loan perhaps earning fees but where they paid the full wage by loan clubs ? And not all those sold had loans Now they are sold the number and experience and wage of youth players must be a lot less

I thought that was the plan but maybe giving up huge chunk of your career in these long contracts is why wages are higher? Nothing makes sense rn with Chelsea and overall strategy.

Yep it's money why he made his mind up and wanted out! We could of said to him you be playing every game this season and see what he would of said because at city 3 years left = 4m Chelsea 7 years contract first two years 100k= 10m then an increase after that so his whole contract be around 50m!

We should held out for 60m of Chelsea if they can afford to pay that to him oh he had a signing on fee too..

Who wouldn't want to go there for that!!
Chelsea made a bid about 15 days after his chat with Pep. That's some pretty good looking into the future by the lad.

What do you mean I am talking about city not Chelsea

When we did A we didn't have a recruitment structure of any kind. It was just Tuchel and Boehly running around Europe signing players. That's how we ended up with Sterling, Cucurella, Koulibaly and Auba, of which only Sterling looks useful to us a year down the line. Since the sporting structure has been set up, there's been a clear shift in direction and that is youth, youth and youth.

The reason why I'm OK with Poch for now is he is well known for being very good at developing young players. I hope he stays true to that and doesn't succumb to the pressures of Chelsea and start making uber pragmatic, self-preservation decisions. He needs to be given the safety of knowing he can unleash the shackles and let the young players make mistakes. If the time comes in a couple of years where we feel we're close but Poch has taken this team as far as he can, then he can be replaced by someone else (maybe Pep? :) ) who does have track record of creating winning teams.

I have a soft spot for Chelsea but I worry for them that they have absolutely fucked it and could become Everton within 5 years.

Friends who are Chelsea fans have tried to explain to me why this unique "long term contracts for young players and if it doesn't pan out just sell them" strategy is genius ... but it's all theory. It's an experiment. If it's so clever why has nobody else done it?

I have my doubts that they'll be able to easily shift any of them if they decide to.
They've now got group of guys in their early 20s earning relatively high money even for footballers, locked in for 7 years, living in London, which is a big pull ... they're relying very heavily on their motivation to maximize their football potential and win trophies.

Much as we'd like it to be, that's not always the biggest motivating factor for a footballer. Money, fame/anonymity, prestige, family life, location, challenge ... these are all factors. Chelsea have ceded cards to these guys and there's just as much chance of them all becoming Winston Bogarde as there is of them all becoming Frank Lampard.
