City will again be ‘at home’ at Wembley for the FA Community Shield on 7 August against United.

Blues’ fans will again be housed in the West End of the stadium, as was the case in the FA Cup semi-final clash with the Reds and the FA Cup Final against Stoke.

City will receive 28,000 tickets for the 2011/12 curtain-raiser and will be playing in the Community Shield for the first time, though the Blues did take part in the Charity Shield – its predecessor - on seven occasions in the past, the last being against Burnley in 1973.

Tickets details will be posted later this month but will cost £45, £35, £25, £20. Kick-off is at 2.30pm.

This isn’t the first Manchester derby in Charity Shield. The first was back in 1956 when United won 1-0 at Maine Road in the days before the match was played at Wembley.

We have had seven appearances in the game and have won three and lost four of the traditional curtain-raiser.

With the North American tour and Dublin Super Cup to come before this game, it promises to be a fascinating pre-season. Follow it all here first and exclusive on mcfc.co.uk

This is from a Burnley site:

The 1973 Charity Shield should have been played between Sunderland and Liverpool, but back then the competition was not perceived to be that glamorous so both teams decided to opt out, Man City had won the comp in 1972 so were invited to play again and Burnley being 2nd Division champs were also invited. Funnily enough I seem to remember the season after Leeds and Liverpool were originally asked but refused so Burnley as holders were invited to play again, then the FA stepped in and moved the venue to Wembley, so immediately Leeds and Liverpool then decided to play leaving us out in the cold.

Edit:
Got me wondering why we were in the 1972 Charity Shield aswell...

The 1972 FA Charity Shield was contested between Manchester City and Aston Villa.

Normally, the Charity Shield would have been contested by the First Division champions and FA Cup holders, who were Derby County and Leeds United, but both declined the chance to play in the Charity Shield. Instead, Manchester City, who had finished in fourth place in the First Division; and Aston Villa, who finished as Third Division champions accepted the invitation to play.

The match was played at Villa Park and Manchester City won 1–0 following a penalty from striker Francis Lee.

hope so - want to take my teenage daughter who's not a seasoncard holder but is in Live4city - she's never been to Wembley
