Until Oakes was mentioned, I'd never even have considered it, but I agree, in many ways it is Oakes. It was often the case that you didn't notice his efforts for the team - until he wasn't playing (which was fortunately rare).

Xabi Alonso but not on the same level unfortunately

for a second post in 2 years that comment has obviously had some serious consideration - I assume Gaz Baz is on a much more elevated level than your favourite Alonso then?

Don't really see how the amount of posts I've had has anything to do with this but I just think Alonso has the edge over Baz. Gareth has been one of our best players this season if not one of the best in the league, Alonso is just a better player in my opinion.

Reminds me a lot of Didi Hamann in the way he brings the ball out so calmly, finds a pass, scores a few, and if anyone dares to tackle him in our half, down he goes and unfailingly gets the free kick.

For me it's Albertini from AC Milan and Italy - key player in a fantastic side.

Barry would give Alonso a ten-break in play not involving the ball, his mastery at showing a ball carrying opponent that he's read his intentions and thus mugging him into a cul de sac is just shy of stupendous.....perhaps why Vierra declares him to be the main man in the drum.
