Compression socks for long haul flights any good?

I used to take the piss out of my Mrs for wearing . I then got a DVT from sleeping with my legs bent up in a flight and ended up in intensive care with a PE in Dubai. I would tell anyone to always wear them, move around a bit and don’t drink to much booze

Better to have them than not have them.

I always wear them, no point saying afterwards, "I wish I had"
If it gives you peace of mind, then wear them. It's your choice.

I've never bothered wearing them, millions of passengers successfully fly long haul every day without wearing them, a friend of mine is a BA captain flying long haul and he doesn't wear them.

The drive to the airport probably has more chance of killing you in an accident than catching DVT from flying.

Just my thoughts on things, that we can't wrap ourselves in cotton wool at every perceived danger being alive presents us on a daily basis.

I've done many long haul flights and always had a few drinks, I was told it thins the blood so it's a good idea to combat DVT.

Alcohol can thin your blood by reducing its natural ability to form clots. While this might sound beneficial, the risks associated with drinking alcohol outweigh any potential health benefits.
Alcohol acts as a blood thinner of sorts. It makes it harder for your blood to clot. This may lower your risk for the type of strokes caused by blockages in blood vessels.

Back when I flew medium-haul quite a lot I used to have a couple of ‘gentlemen’s measures’ before getting on a flight because I’d heard the same. Also because I hate flying. The best method for avoiding being squeezed into a window seat next to Giant Haystacks and Rip Van Winkle I found was to book flights that left at ungodly hours. If the flight’s half empty, no-one cares if you stretch out. I’m also extremely nice and chatty to fight attendants on quiet flights - it has multiple benefits, one of which being getting upgraded to business class more than once.
