Confessions of a Glory Hunter.

It was easier being a blue when we were s**t no expectations and easier to take when we lost .
In the past if we lost a match it wasn't to bad as we only really needed to win 1 in 3 so I could shrug off a defeat knowing if we won the next game we were alright, but now every league game feels like a cup game every point won or lost feels a lot more important than in the past its a lot harder to take defeat and I find it a lot harder waiting for the next game to make amends.

yes we were shit...but it made the precious few pockets of success that much sweeter...

when we won the League Cup in 76 (I was 12 at the time), to me it felt like we had attained the summit of footballing excellence

for example, being underdogs in the derby for so long, when we actually won (89 is still among my personal favourite City games of all time) it was like all the jibes and ridicule were worth it. The scum fans that I knew were visibly shaken that day...

Supporting City has been like an addiction for me...you know its not good for you, you resent that it drags you back again and again while it offers nothing in return but once in a blue moon it gives you enough of the feeling you crave to keep you wanting more

Because I've only been a follower for about 4 years now and what always drew me to this club was a sort of "acceptance" or perhaps "humility". And I'm not sure those are even the right words. And "typical City" - while charming in its own way seems to be a throw back to an era we can forget.

I see you're in the states,i'm interested to know what made you aware of our club? were you even aware we existed prior to the money?

Yes. I was aware of the club.

I have a group of friends that follow football and so did I. When we were kids we all followed the Tulsa Roughnecks (try Wikipedia for that team). But that was years ago. My interests were mainly the US national team and the Kansas City Wizards (now Sporting KC). This was around 2006/2008.

When we would gather for drinks or dinner they always talked about their favorite English team and told me I should pick a side. This is the truth: one is a ManU fan, one a Spurs fan, one a Arsenal fan, one a Chelsea fan and one a Liverpool fan (but he likes Barca more than Liverpool - typical). Anyway, they each lobbied me non-stop to start supporting and following their team - especially the Spurs guy.

During this time was the change in ownership and their collective moaning about City intrigued me. I was aware of the limited success in the past and for some reason decided this was the team for me. Don't ask me how that final decision was made other than it was made for me I guess.

And I don't pretend to enjoy the success as much as someone that has followed the team for 40+ years. That would just be silly. And probably a bit insulting to the folks that were there way before me. I'm genuinely happy for the long time fans and curious about their stories.

Hope that explains it.

I had a similar experience following MCFC also.

A bunch of buddies of mine from College also were huge football fans: one was a ManU fan, Another Real Madrid, one Barca, One Chelsea, One Liverpool, one AC Milan, and one Benfica supporter. All lobbied for me to follow their club. I wanted to be different so I began watching games, the first game I caught was City vs. Red Bull Saltzburg and Adam Johnson's goal mesmerized me.
I also feel the same as you, happy for the success for the long-time fans and am just enjoying the ride. I know as a long-time sufferer of being a NY Knicks fan, if/when we win an NBA Championship I think I would cry for a week.

OP before I reply I need to know whether you would ever wear a half and half scarf ?

Just askin'

No. I would not.

But I did buy one for my Chelsea friend (his request) at the friendly in St. Louis earlier this year.

I say "welcome aboard" basokla, you don't sound anything like a glory hunter to me. People decide to support a team for all sorts of different reasons and you've got your own reason, enjoy the ride and hope you miss the bumps some of us old farts have hit in the past.

he started supporting us when we ran into some money, with the possibility of silverware on the horizon. How is that not being a glory hunter?

I was a Chelsea fan from 2003-2009, between 1992 and 2003 I was a United fan, fast forward to 2009 until 2013 I was a City fan, I now support Arsenal as their top of the league.

Westminster beckons thee.

I've been a huge fan of the White Sox for donkeys. Born and raised in the "Little Kenya" area of downtown Chicago to an unmarried seamstress of immigrant Polish peasant stock, it was a natural choice. I well remember my first game when the pitcher made a great lay-up and the whole of Wrigley Field shouted "icing!" These days - in the West Wing - I confine myself to watching them take on the Cardinals throughout the season.

Good lad. Now to answer your question which is slightly misleading.
If you are asking what was it like supporting City.. it was shit
If you are asking what it was like on Blue Moon, it was shit.

In the relegation years away games were drink, funny cigarettes and a laugh interrupted by football. It was a little surreal, I remember going to some crap mid week away match whilst on the same night the rags were conquering Europe but it was as though they didn't exist. It was as if you had to go, you had no choice. The football was shit but so what.
In more recent times but before the money things were not much better. The brilliant tactician Stuart Pearce devised a playing system that meant we didn't score at home from Christmas until the end of the season. If it hadn't been for alcohol I think I would be in an institution !
But we still turned up. It is in our blood, we are pessimists, worriers, miserable bastards but we are blue. I am sure there are City fans who would like those days back.

Any way welcome on board, anyone that doesn't wear a half and half (or take photos half way through the match - ask which is the Stretford End or call it soccer) is welcome.
