I understand that premier league rules for next season state we can only have a 25 man squad plus any number of under 21 players but how does this affect us with regard to the domestic cup competitions and the Europa league?

Basically is there a possibilty we might keep one or two players who are NOT registered for the PL but ARE for the Europa league, Fa Cup and League Cup?

So contrary to what the papers are saying we could actually keep a few of the players we are said to be selling for our cup campaigns... If we progress as we should they could end up playing the equivalent of a premier league season anyway. This would basically be in built rotation with the added bonus that we could draft them into the premier league squad in january if one of the 25 picked up a long term injury...

The 25 man squad rule has actually been in force for the past few seasons. The difference to this season is that at least 8 (I think) of the players have to be classed as 'home grown'. Which means they have to have been trained in England, not necessarily English.

City should be fine for this rule with the likes of Onuoha, Richards, Hart, Given, Ireland, Johnson, Johnson, Bellamy, Barry, Bridge, Wrighty, Lescott et al.

SQUADS
Prem requires a max of 25 players of which 8 must have been trained in England and Wales.

Uefa, for Europa Cup, requires a squad of 25 of which 8 must have been trained in England and Wales. PLUS, of those 8, 4 must be club trained.

Players who are club trained and under 21 (eg Weiss, Boyata, Ibrahim) can play in both competitions, and are registered on a separate list.

It also appears to mean that under 21s who have not been in the Association (Prem rules) or Club (Uefa rules) are not eligible for the B list. Thus Guidetti is not eligible for the list this year but would be next year, after doing 3 years with us. Helan has 2 more years to wait.

Players who are not included on the list of 25 cannot play in the relevant competition. The lists can only be amended after the January window. The players can, however, play in FA & Carling Cups.

It's normally a few days before the start of the season, you then get to confirm the squad again at the end of the transfer window, so, probably 12th August for initial squad and then confirmation on 1st September.

So some poor sod will be named in the squad then booted out again if we make another couple of 'beat the deadline' signings !!

Nah, you get to play your squad as you see fit until September 1st.

And the idea of carrying players just for cup games is ludicrous.
