Conti Cup 2022/23 Manchester City vs Sunderland

Seems to me that Esme is much better in the middle these days - by playing Greenwood the same issues exist - too deep and too many touches plus the midfield always look for the safe pass backwards to her slowing it down. Both Steph and Greenwood want to also have the insurance by playing 20 yards deeper which leaves space in front and doesn't help our midfield. Recently having Morgan and Aleix as the back pair means we play further up and much quicker. I've always thought Greenwood, when she arrived, was a better left back and is not the best at controlling the pace at which we should play when in the middle.

Full-Time 3-0. Job done I guess.
Job done but it wasn't spectacular viewing when you consider whereabouts Sunderland lie in the Championship. Easy scoreline but it should have been at least half a dozen. We don't have miss some soft 'uns. And we must have had ten or twelve passes to every Sunderland touch! The OS suggests that we were under pressure at the back end of the first half. I was thinking at one point that Sunderland hadn't touched the ball inside our penalty area and then they had two corners in quick succession and that was about the limit of their ambition. In the second half I think that Ellie didn't have a save to make.

I often wonder whether our players are instructed not to shoot until we are well embedded in the oppo penalty area.

I think a few of us have been calling for Blakstad and Raso to be regular starters and I'm glad Taylor is, finally, opening his eyes!

Also pretty glad Houghton is playing again and can't wait to see her play live to see where she is in confidence.

As for Shaw? Again, some of could see she's a player and is, finally, finding her feet within the team.

Taylor's team (if he's still here next year) is now as he wants it, more or less, and cannot afford to be slow starters in the future.

Good stuff all round today.
