Corners (again)

You need players to attack the ball at corners. Only one whoever does that is Kompany. Success rate should improve now he's back. Indeed he scored from one recently didn't he?

The ball's got to be played into an area where it can be attacked though. Otherwise, if you do an out-swinger, players can be in front of the ball when it gets to the danger area or for an in-swinger they could be well behind it.

Interesting that Pep has specifically mentioned corners, set pieces & how Kompany has been missed at both ends.

So maybe the feeling is that we just don't currently have the players & that's why this weird corner business has developed. If you put KDB in West Brom's team he'd be putting in howitzers all the time & get about 20 assists a season from set pieces.

I genuinely think theres an attitude difference as well. When a team like West Brom get a corner they know they might get 4 a game and it's a very good opportunity to score - possibly their only chances to score in that game.

With a team like us...we get 8 a game, and usually another 10 chances to score created from open play. The relatvie importance of the corner goes down and I think players, both the takers and the defenders coming up for the corner don't put as much focus and effort into each one. Certainly some of our corners seem to be a case of going through the motions.

as proven all season, keep swinging the ball in to the 6 yard box with bodies in there and you get chances and goals.

Do what we do 90% of the time and stand around the corner flag and go short or swing it out, and see the opposition run down the other end and make Bravo shit himself.

Are these only goals scored direct from corners? So goals like Vinny's, where KDB's fairly rubbish corner found its way back to him to set up the chance, wouldn't count?

No, they analyse the goals scored from corners by number of touches. 48 of the 135 goals were scored after three or more touches.

don't know whether it's been mentioned already - but the way the pitch runs off at a steep angle at the Etihad, just over the lines, doesn't help in my opinion. The corner taker has to start off on a slope and doesn't get a natural run up to strike the ball - Silva in particular always looks like he struggles with it. Don't know if away teams stats back this up at all and obviously it's no excuse for shit corners away from home.

I see that we are bottom of the league when it comes to scoring from corners. Surely there must be someone in the club that can come up with something to improve this ratio. Why not play it long to the opposite side of the box for Kevin or sane to have a go at passing it along the 6yd box for someone to run onto the ball.
