Coronavirus (2021) thread

Day to day tells you little. Trends matter most. 4 deaths today are equally misleading. They will likely be up tomorrow and that would be equally wrong to consider significant.

But again like with the cases the trends are in the right direction over the past week or so. That is the thing to watch.
You have been excellent in this thread throughout.
Being polite however, I hope your daily updates will become irrelevant very quickly whilst we begin to see wider acceptance of limited number of deaths (JVT called 20 a day acceptable) and vaccine effect works.

Independent reporting news carried by the Times. Yes I know that's strange. Anyway...

"We will have a lot to say about the booster programme soon. It’s looking really positive so far...“We think that the level of protection in the population to any variant will be so high that, by Christmas, Covid-19 should have just faded into the background like any other illness in circulation.”

And another story: Porton-down to be involved in research against new variants including vaccines

That's a very positive statement. The conspiracy theorists will be gutted that their perfect utopia of us being locked down forever is crumbling before their very eyes.

A bit more detail about the Times article as it is behind a paywall.

Chris Whitty is supervising this work and there are two approaches:

New versions of existing vaccines.

Booster shots of Pfizer or AZ.

Both approaches are indicating good results.

They would be offered to all over 50s and those with vulnerabilities and they would be delivered at the same time as the flu jab but in the other arm.

I think some people are prepared to wait a bit longer to get their second jab closer to home, based on some people I know. I just went back to the same vaccination centre.
You're right. Take a look at Mumsnet (no, don't) and see several women deciding to delay their pre-booked second jab a few days or so to help with childcare or get a closer appointment. I expect were prioritising the first jab over everything earlier in the year.

Parts of Wales now so far ahead they are inviting 18 to 29 year olds for their first jab.

Both Cardiff and the North Wales coast area are now doing this.

Wales has vaccinated the highest proportion of population of the UK nations.

The very low case numbers are a consequence it seems. See below.
