Question on the stuff re the mutation news from tonight, if as it seems this SA strain spells bad news. Am I being naive or will Pfizer, Astra, Moderna etc already be on this case and likely to come up with something in the next few weeks which will work against it? Realise I'm probably missing something here, but people have said vaccines can be adapted within 6 weeks if necessary to beat new strains, what sort of point does this process begin if not now?
When the SA strain was first mentioned they said that they had the scientists at Porton Down looking at it. I am sure they will have passed any information that is required onto the vaccine manufacturers so that they can adapt their products if required.

Interestingly the Mail have an article about the South African version on their website referring to it as super infectious. Whilst I am not trying to play down any concerns about this strain the media don't do themselves any favours with this type of hyperbole.
They also go on to say that it has been spreading here since October and at least 54 people have been diagnosed with it. Again I am not playing it down however they still seem more interested in gaining clicks rather than explaining things properly.

been talking to a Dr friend tonight. Rather depressing news, essentially she said the virus is behaving differently to other coronarvirus's and its unpredictable in the way it attacks different tissue and organs in people, more younger people in icu than last spring wave and even with the vaccine there are likely to be further severe restrictions on our society in the next few years.
Not to say that this conversation wasn’t a sincere one with deep and concerning thought into how the future pans out, but how exactly are we expected to keep doing this for multiple years ? Irrespective of how safe I keep myself and following every single policy and guideline, I don’t see how it’s even possible to do what we’re doing now for many more years to come. It surely can’t be possible.

Positive test result came through during the night as expected. Rapidly gone downhill overnight and feel like shite now. That’s 4 of us from work so far out of a workforce of 10. My boss had it last March and his test came back negative.

Its equivalent of 94%, we have no idea how many have been tested multiple times, or for what reason (I suspect a lot of health workers are included in that total, and some are tested twice a week, understandably).

Until recently it was only if you had symptoms (or worked in health services), and many, especially younger, never get any symptoms, so why would they have a test ?
It was on the news last night that a study from an area of London (possibly Enfield) found that tested people
who didn’t have symptoms made up a higher proportion of positive cases, compared to people tested with symptoms. I think it was one in 13 vs one in 21. People who couldn’t work from home (in the area) were encouraged to get tests and this could have partly influenced the results.

There must be an awful lot of repeat tests in that 62million (I guess many, like the footballers, tested weekly).

I don't know anyone who's been tested, let alone definitely had it (yet).
I know bar staff who were getting tested every week as a precaution. IMHO, too much is being made of the number of tests in the U.K. since we haven’t had an effective track and trace system for most of the pandemic.

That applies to all the main 'newspapers' regardless of their political stance. The Guardian will put as much alarmist shite in its rolling live blog as possible whilst the Telegraph specialises in having articles with completely opposite information in consecutive articles.
