Cases by specimen update for several days after the day as data catches up, it's happened every Tuesday and Wednesday since April, so the +4 days is misleading, as it's just catch ups.

Yep they update for about a week, but by specimen date is the date the person took the test though. it could take a week for that specimen to be processed but it will be attributed to the date it was taken.

only way it could be a back log is if they class specimen date as the date it arrives at the lab rather then the date the person took the test which isn't what it descibes.

It should be an accurate description of the number of infected on that exact day.

The numbers have been growing and growing but i honestly felt yesterday's numbers were the peak and inflated due to catch up over the previous days and weeks.

When i saw the figures today I felt physically sick.

Its by sample date. so its the date the person took a test. its only the "reported date" ones that suffer that lag and catch up.
I've been following our local numbers by specimen date, and we have a spike in "by sample date" every Tuesday (it was Wednesday after christmas), no idea why that is, but it is.

In any case there were very few tests on those 2 days, because there was probably a shortage of testers, and people didn't want to go out to get tested anyway, plus it can take up to 7 days for symptoms to appear, so there would be more than 1 day of spikes surely ?

My biggest concern about those numbers today is that this is another 700 out of hospital deaths in England alone - to add to all those yesterday. Many of these are in care homes and THIS is the real scandal here.

England has shamefully let down those in care homes and it was obvious from day one they were the most at risk.

When this is over this will rightly be a scandal.
Unless you isolate the staff with the residents you can't stop the spread. Asymptomatic spread makes this disease the killer it is.

How are the two separated? Barely anyone uses that thread for good reason. All the restrictions etc are literally political decisions. Sorry, I iust don't get it and never will.
Posts that don't mention covid are not about covid are they ? If you want to discuss Johnson, Patel or any other politician without reference to covid go do it there.

I really hope it isn't the care homes, the handling of the care homes in the first wave was shocking but I clung to the hope that the Government would learn from the mistakes and ensure they were protected when the second wave came.

If it comes out that this was not the case and they were let down for a second time then serious questions need to be made and people held accountable.

You can instigate blanket daily testing. You can stop returning patients from hospital. You can lock down further to reduce the risk to workers. You can follow through on getting patients and carers vaccinated first, as was promised in December. Rather than changing the goalposts all the time.

Defeatism is a disgusting thing and it plagues the west's responses. It's politically opportune excuse mongering. You can do many, many things, which we chose not to. Instead we wheeled out excuses as to why none of it was worth it. History will show that with excruciating clarity.

When this is over careers will be ended because of this. As a nation we should be ashamed at allowing this to happen to our most vulnerable. Some of whom likely helped us not now be a Nazi colony.
Due to bed shortages, they are sending people home to their loved ones or to hotels who are very frail so a good proportion of the additional deaths actually started out in hospital.

I goto care homes for work not often , got called out Saturday afternoon no test for me , another company fitted a boiler on Friday no test , that’s not the government fault

2 weeks ago went to care home owners house just for a boiler service there are elderly bame, few week ago another care home , the owner wanted to shake hands etc

so this is 3 care homes I been , no test I work all different settings , so I might take taken them into a care home or other contractors you just think up and down the UK this happening

hmm, maybe postal delay over weekends, of tests being sent out so more samples being taken post weekend. but you would expect that to be a monday spike if that was the case.

average is 4/5 days for symptoms.
