The EMA and EU should focus on getting more vaccines approved and vaccinations ramped up from their available supply, before challenging exports to other Countries in public. If they had concerns about the equity of vaccine distribution, which might well be reasonable, they could have picked this up in private with AZ and Pfizer.

I was referring to somebody else’s posts re. AZ employees
Especially France

On isolation - I don't suppose any of you saw This Morning - but they had this young covidiot live from the Middle East in a bikini by a pool who claimed to have followers on line for being a 'motivator' and had no regrets posting her 'content' because it 'inspired' her followers and as a 'professional inspirer' the trip was work related.

About if she would self isolate and pay for a hotel on return she said she intended staying there until she could do things back here.

About time someone sent a message and took her passport away temporarily and or assured her they would find her 'free' accommodation in Hotel Holloway on return until she did some truly inspitational community service like clearing up the mess in hospitals for a month.

But of course nothing will happen and these kinds of fingers up to the real heroes and heroines will continue.

She was asked about the message to nurses and doctors on the front line from what she was doing and claimed to be an essential worker - as they showed her having a joy ride on a camel.

We need to clamp down on things like this not make a joke out of it which seemed to be the point.

I do not regard this as an amusing story. I regard it as a terrible message to people out there to do what they like that someone should be making clear and showing would have consequences.

I saw the interview and as irritating as it was I don't think she technically broke any law by flying there when she did? Morally is another story. I think Schofield said the rules on what's essential travel have been tightened since although what's deemed essential is subjective I guess

These so called online celebrity bloggers I don't get but a lot seem to make a decent living out of doing it and with the job situation as it is I can't blame them. She's certainly not as reprehensible as that Scottish mp who travelled on a train in spite of knowing she had covid and kept her well paid job.

I would imagine loads of rich people and some not so rich but with holiday apartments abroad got away in December before foreign travel was banned. I have friends in their seventies in Tenerife at the moment who are going to stay there until the weather and hopefully restrictions here improve. I can't say I blame them as even though there is a curfew there and restrictions they can still get some sun and have a beer while watching some live entertainment, something we can't do here.

I agree with you though it is stretching it to say doing exercise classes and posting pictures online from Dubai is essential business.

The fact we will have nearly 7 million people vaccinated by the end of the day is mind blowing.
Excellent news.
Do we know how many of those are actually vaccinated (i.e. had both doses) and how many have simply had their first dose? I know that is a technical difference, but it will be a factor, as those awaiting the second dose will need to be supplied in early April, presumably.

If nearly 80% of the over 80’s are vaccinated and they count for the large majority of hospitalisations/deaths then surely restrictions should ease late feb/March. The whole point of lockdowns was to stop hospitals getting overrun. That’s what I’m hoping anyway because every day this government are all contradicting each other

Around 550k second dosed.

But with a 85-90% short term efficency off the first dose it should be more than enough to bridge the gap between 1st and 2nd.

There's nowhere in the world I'd rather be living right now than the UK

Hopefully it's a case of underpromising and over delivering. Not backing themselves into a corner like they have done a few times since this started. Keep everything as it is. Watch the cases fall. Then assess.

Whatever they do will be criticised.

It’s a bit concerning international politics is being played on vaccinating people. Should be a joined up effort by the entire planet not the better off Western countries squabbling with each other. Longer this virus goes unchecked in under developed countries the more chance of new variants happening that can reset everything back to zero on the vaccine front.
There's been no joined up plan in combating CV when trying to stem it's spread....there's so much money involved in being able to 'return to normal' there's no way any country isn't going to try and grab what they want as quickly as possible....one world v Corona....yeah right.

Just more recent affirmation today of what has been posted by others yesterday on the Israel/Pfizer data feedback - Me likey!

No serious Covid cases among those receiving both Pfizer jabs in Israel, minister says

Israel, which has already given a full set of Pfizer/BioNTech vaccinations to over 6% of its citizens, has not registered a single serious Covid case among them, even as infections surge in the wider population, the government has said, Reuters reports.
Health minister Yuli Edelstein told a parliamentary panel that new infections and hospital admissions for serious or critical COVID-19 complications were now at record numbers. But he said he knew of “no serious morbidity” among Israelis eligible for the vaccination certificate - a document issued by the state a week after the second dose is administered, when Pfizer says the vaccine is 95% effective.
He said 0.014% had contracted milder forms of Covid-19. According to Health Ministry figures, 23% have received the first shot and more than 6% the second, between 21 and 28 days later. A week after beginning vaccinations, it imposed its third national lockdown, which officials say may need to be extended into February.
But last Thursday it reported a reproduction number - known as “R” - of less than 1, which indicates that epidemic is no longer growing.

Fantastic effort from the Government.

Some thoughts:

The "8% efficacy for 65+" is unproven, and study data are well known since months.
Media story broke last week - in Austria first, not Berlin - to put more pressure on the EMA decision due in 3 days.
Many EU countries waiting for vaccines want FULL approval for AZ/Oxford, like Austria. As data for 65+ are not sufficient an EMA approval for under 65s seems quite probable to me. That was EU philosophy all day long: safety first. We'll see on Friday, hopefully.

AZ production problems in the Belgium Novasep site can surely happen, but EU are surprised that the shortage isn't split down over all existing contracts but handled differently. EU deliveries are not limited to continental EU sites and EU have the right to full AZ data access for this vaccine.
To gain control of production and export figures EU comes up with this transparency register, which only seems to be a threat and a call for fair delivery. EU did support AZ rampup by €336m upfront in August and are asking now if the contract is still in place or not.
UK would do the same surely.

Too much noise in this IMO. A good contract should have covered these problems I guess.

Why doesn't Boris try to regain some statesmanship kudos by calling a meeting in London for all European leaders to have a summit on the concept - vaccines are for the whole world not for greed - or some such.
I'm not sure they'd want to come to London and isolate for 10 days, but maybe they could have a zoom meeting ?

;-)
