Coronavirus: Football Discussion Thread

Very sad news from France this morning. Pape Diouf, Chairman of OM until fairly recently, has died of this rotten virus. Quite apart from the tragic nature of his apparently very sudden death, Marseille are the country's second biggest (arguably biggest) club. And Pape Diouf was a very high profile media figure in French football and seems to have been liked by all who knew and worked with him. So, to put it into perspective, this is the equivalent of one of our domestic club's Chairman (Chairperson?) or ex-Chairman dying of this disease. You can't help hoping this will change the perspective of people running the game. Why they don't just declare the season null and void is beyond me.

One of the elder statesmen of French football, for years. I hadn't heard about this until this post. Very sad news indeed. He wasn't all that old, either (not yet into his seventies).

The problem with giving the Premier League trophy to Livarpool. Is that then you would be saying that this is how the Premier League table has finished. So therefore the bottom 3 clubs will be relegated. This would then open the Premier League to be sued, by these 3 clubs. Also if they give the Premier League title to Livarpool, would you not be saying that the top 3 championship clubs have to be promoted. This would have to continue right down the football pyramid.

Let's cancel this season 2019/20 and hopefully we will be able to start the season2020/21 in August. This would allow the government to put all it resources into fighting this virus. It will also allow all clubs to deep clean their respective grounds and training grounds as well.

No one will be safe from this pandemic, Mansour’s assets are lot more diversified then just relying on the price of oil. He made some serious money propping up Barclays in the last crash.

On weathering this storm I would rather be in City’s shoes rather than United with a huge debt to pay off with no income happening from playing football at the moment. Then there is Spurs who will have not have factored in their stadium not being in use for the foreseeable future until this is gone.
Less than 50% of Abudhabi GDP is from oil. I would imagine that Adug has diversified quite widely.

Yes that is sad news that Pape Diouf has died. Just to show that this virus can kill anyone news broke last night that a 13y old girl in Belgium died of this virus. This goes to show that this virus will and can kill any body regardless of age. However the football bodies in this country are more concerned about trying to finish a football season then keeping players safe

I hope everyone is staying safe, by following the rules set out by the government. At night it is totally dead where I live.

Even this nonsense idea of a tournament in the midlands played at Wolves, Villa and Leicester is ridiculous. Why for example should we lose the advantage of having 6 games of our final 10 at home to play all 10 on neutral venues? Why did Liverpool have the chance to use home advantage against us but we are denied this against them? In short the very fact the season will become so skewed must make it completely invalid and open to any legal challenge. Meanwhile we can watch the power brokers in football show their true colours as they continue to pitch any daft idea imaginable to keep their pockets lined.

It's Null and Void and start again in August (Virus permitting) or frankly cancel football forever, as it is clear to see that those who run the game, do not have its integrity as their 1st interest.

fuck that just void the whole thing & start again....if possible...

Senior executives are now talking about June being optimistic as a potential time to restart the season rather than the previous hope of having 30 June as a date to conclude it.

Premier League clubs are holding back from asking first-team players to accept wage cuts or deferrals for fear of sparking a transfer frenzy by breaching their contracts.

Senior figures from Premier League clubs, the broadcast industry, and European/International football administration are convinced the COVID-19 crisis will lead to financial problems for worldwide broadcasters, with less money for sports rights in the near future.

English clubs have major concerns, from players and club personnel, about completing European obligations in their current format which requires regular travel. The FA are likely to express concerns regarding air travel, airports, and hotels to UEFA delegates.

UEFA are set to discuss ideas designed to minimise travel and lower the risk of players and staff contracting COVID-19. One idea is to hold one-legged rounds from the quarter finals, while an end of season mini tournament in one destination, has been suggested.

This last one is the indy so might be delnay

One of the more drastic suggestions has 'picked up momentum' in the last few days: To void the current Premier League season.

At least four Premier League clubs now favour the idea. PL clubs would collectively lose up to £1.2bn if the season is voided. All of the current top-half teams are determined to finish the campaign.

Various papers tonite
All top half teams? That's a very sweeping statement. I'd doubt we'd be in that bracket even with another possible quad on the table.

Seems like the bent uefa bastards are determined to get their tournaments finished at any costs. I despair I really do, I don't want it going ahead behind closed doors, no point whatsoever, the players are still at high risk ffs. Sick of all this bullshit, all about the money again from those high up in power in charge of football.

I have thought of this

Mo Farah is running the marathon,he is far ahead of the pack when a stray comet lands on the road and stops them all finishing the race, they won't say to Mo you take the gold because you were ahead because he didn't finish the race

Simples

But something similar did happen ,if you remember the marathon in the 2012 Olympics. A Brazilian runner was miles ahead and that Looney priest came running out and stopped him. He composed himself but got overtaken in the kerfuffle. He ended up with the bronze eventually. I'm not sure if they organised a petition on merseyside to give him an honoury gold medal
