Coronavirus: Football Discussion Thread

How can you change the rules part way through a season!... 5 subs being discussed, this gives an advantage to teams with bigger squads. Also neutral grounds should not be a consideration... Null and void is the only answer.

Yep. You cannot change things so dramatically at this stage without negatively impacting on some parties beyond what could be argued as being fair. Imagine being one of the teams at the bottom of the table. You have already played one of your relegation rivals away from home with a full crowd of home supporters and all the advantages that gives. Now suddenly you dont get a home advantage game or even if you do it's in front of none of your fans. Throw in the away team can now make 5 changes when you were limited to 3 in the equivalent game and where is the sporting integrity people have been banging on about?

I love how they are saying it will lift the nations mood! Ha ha. Men maybe but the majority of women? I doubt it.

Can just imagine those discussions.

“You can deal with our highly anxious and emotional kids today love because there are 5 live games on sky back to back”

My mood will change when people have stopped dying from this virus, our NHS are safe in their job. On a selfish note when after a weeks hard work I can drop the roof and drive through the country side.

Playing football in the middle of all this shit we have at the moment is more likely to make more angry

I’m going to seriously struggle to take a televised game played behind closed doors seriously. The dead atmosphere and shouty players will make it seem like a training game.

If the German league gets started before ours, I’m sure most fans will see it for what it is. A complete farce and a huge turn-off.

Wasn’t it Jock Stein that said “football without fans is nothing”. Forget the circumstances of why most fans don’t want the season to finish, and our childish glee, none of it makes sense to finish.

Football isn’t a matter of life and death, far far from it. It’s a game that we pay to watch. I won’t be paying to watch a debacle of football behind closed doors. If and when they decide to go down that route, then it’s purely for money. Money, profit and money. And for that, you can fuck off.

Stop stringing everyone a long. End the season and agree to start again whenever the government decide zero lockdown rules are required, when you can shake hands with another person without fear, and life has a degree of normality again.

5 substitutes ! why not do what we used to do as kids, flash goaly where when we were short of players anyone could save a goal bound shot, and why waste time with substitutions, just get one player to run on as the other runs off and keep doing that throughout the game.

I am sure it is not impossible to construct and carry out a safe training programme at their place of work.
At the City training ground for example, there are many changing facilities. Lots of space. The players could be trained in shifts, 2 hour slots would be plenty. Some could work inside others outside. Fitness training would not be a problem to do it safely.
The main issues, would be treating injuries, massage treatments and the such.
If the government ease some restrictions on the 7th may, then I am sure football and other industries will alter their plans .
Factor in the increase in vapour plumes from athletes and social distancing doubles , trebles, quadruples, shared use of equipment would have to be minimal and clean downs would have to be ramped up. If they manage it, i'd like to see how.

I dont think it would take a decade to recover if things opened tomorrow. This wasn't brought on by a lack of confidence or economic issues. The issue is when things are going to open fully as it isn't going to be in the next few weeks is it?

As for our scouse friends, I would be ok for the league to be finished where it is. Give them the title but there will always be an asterix next to their name as PL champions.

Pubs , restaurants and most sports are probably looking at next year before re-opening , the younger generation i am sure will try to get back to normal ASAP , but most older people i beleive will be wary of getting back to normality and this is generally the generation that has spare money to spend , (my bank balance is looking brilliant since the lockdown :P) ,unfortunately i think a hell of a lot businesses will go to the wall , the leisure/holiday industry is a massive part of the economy and that is not returning any time soon and any loans the government may allow to struggling businesses , will have to be paid back

If the season finished now , the asterisk against the Dippers would be amusing as would their failure to break any of our records , every cloud.
