Countries and their ashamed history

It’s not ashamed history, it’s history and if it’s shameful then we need to learn from it. It’s typical of countries such as ours to bury it. For example, we in Glasgow revered the Tobacco Merchants, streets named after them. We were never told they were Slavers. Then you look into it and most of our wealth was either made through dodgy shit or stolen. Some people can’t stand accepting that. All that loot never made it down to working class people, so, fuck all to do with me ir mine. It’s the establishment and their great estates, art, cash etc who are the utter cunts.

Imagine living during The Crusades? Me neither.
You don’t need to. I don’t think that’s the point of this thread, if I’m reading the OPs intentions right.
I agree with the previous post by @Magicpole
You don’t need to feel ashamed by an objective look at the story of how you arrived where you are today.
Every country has shameful deeds in their history. Over here in Ireland I would immediately think of the Magdalene Laundries and Clerical abuse hidden by the state and the church, which had far too much power.

The point is, do you acknowledge this, address it and learn or grow from it, or do you just say that’s got nothing to do with me?

Your point about the Crusades…
Do you think about them much?
I shouldn’t think so. But…..
Religious wars dominated Europe over a millennium and how they affected various countries through the ages is part of the story of where we are now. That’s just a fact.

Not everyone is interested in history, they’re too busy living life the best they can.

I personally think a healthy respect and objective knowledge of history would create a far more tolerant attitude from people towards others who they deem as ‘not us’.

This. Certainly in the UK in recent years the humanities have been trashed and viewed as insufficiently valuable to the economy and society. This couldn't be further from the truth imo, and a basic lack of contextual understanding and analytical skills in the general population has been exploited, by people who know the price of everything and the value of nothing, and has caused chaos.

The humanities got off lightly compared to the arts

I don't think about it much no, but this point in time showed us/Western Europeans rampaging through Europe, obliterating everything in its path and killing anyone who wasn't Christian, whilst also on the hunt for Muslims in the Middle East.

It's perhaps off topic but I'd class it as conquering. Should we be ashamed about it now? As you said, religious wars are still happening. How do the Belgiums feel about what happened in The Congo?

Nail on the head Mr Pole and the reason I do not like Royalty, titles and the whole system it belongs too.
Working class Brits have nothing to be ashamed of really, they were kept in squalor for the most part and were usually hungry...but somehow the our Royal masters kept us supporting their absolutely unfair and rotten system while they plundered other nations like India, and it irks me that ordinary people still revere (and bow too) these fabulously wealthy unelected Royals.

Well it's worth mentioning that earlier this season, people were calling England fans insensitive for going to the world cup dressed in medieval crusader-style outfits. So there are some people who think (or pretend to think because it gives them clicks) that going to the Qatar dressed as a crusader is problematic because of something that ended over 700 years ago. It's a bit of a patronizing attitude towards people from certain countries that it would be a terrible affront to them, when no-one would give a shit if a bunch of Denmark fans came to England dressed as Vikings, or Italians dressed as Roman soldiers.

I see your point, but I think the debate in here has been sensible for the most part.
