If one person, Mike Pence, had taken a different course of action there could have been a very different outcome. Also, if the rioters had killed him as was their intention, all bets were off. How it would have panned out longer term is impossible to say but in the short term Trump could have suspended the constitution, declared martial law and clung on to power. That was his plan.

However a coup in an even bigger Democracy nearly succeeded in January 2021. It provided a lesson that every right thinking person should learn that Democracy can be more fragile than we think and shouldn’t be taken for granted.

Well yeah, but they actually managed to get their man into power first and did all of the ground work. They didn't just march up to the Capitol Building one day with 50 blokes demanding the head of the president.

This coup attempt seems laughable. Why would they expect anyone in Germany to accept their authority, nevermind the wider EU?

You honestly think the military would have been on board with that? You think the governors of the individual (wealthy) states would have bought into that? Or the individual state police? Or the FBI? Or the CIA?

The notion that this rag tag disorganised bunch of miscreants lacking any real sense of purpose had any realistic prospect of overthrowing an established democracy of 300 million people is a nonsense.

I would say the scenario you paint, In the circumstances that presented themselves, Pence or not, was virtually impossible.

They certainly weren’t directly comparable. My point was that you can’t be complacent about Democracy. This particular attempt in Germany was laughable but there are countries where democratically elected governments have been overthrown in the past where the democratic institutions have not been strong enough, and even a country where those institutions were believed to have been as strong any can be attacked.

I would say the scenario you paint, In the circumstances that presented themselves, Pence or not, was virtually impossible.

It was certainly impossible to sustain but it could have caused chaos in the short term, potentially a civil war or a break up of the union. All bets were off if that vote wasn’t certified by whatever means. Don’t forget the Supreme Court had been loaded with Trumpists.

Agree that the population and military wouldn’t have just shrugged their shoulders and carried on like any number of other countries that have undergone coups d’etat, but there was no plan in place for this eventuality.

Within a short time we had Trump reaction to poll losses rumbling takeover in the background, this German threat and probably worst of all the takeover of the Con Party by extreme right wingers to put their Liz T and others in power.

It worries me how our own so called House of Commens is so vulnerable to extremists amongst its members.
