i don't want to sound like Trump... but surely these new case numbers will continue to increase the more testing is done, especially in poorer nations with high population... or am i being thick ?

Also, I was chatting to an Indian friend this morning who said they’ve got many thousands of positive cases but the death rate is relatively low (compared to the UK) and they think that is because they were quicker to use blood plasma.

Sadly, the cost of the lockdown appears to be taking a bigger toll with my Mum saying someone’s thrown themselves in front of a train at Urmston station, this morning. That follows on from my sad experience at Leeds station a couple of weeks ago. I know that’s not a scientific sample but I’m worried about the human cost of the lockdown.

Anyone able to comment knowledgeably on the latest studies from New York today suggesting a 68% immunity level has now been detected that they hope will let them avoid a second wave later this year.

New York mirrors the UK conurbations in many ways and the way its pandemic climbed fast, peaked then tailed off is very similar to the path in the UK and not like the way it seems to be occurring in other US locations.

Thankfully the Samaritans are saying there has been no noticeable increase in suicides during lockdown.

That’s good to hear Grunge but it says something about the sad, high rate of suicides in a more average year. I think it’s a significant factor in why life expectancy in Manchester hasn’t increased in recent years. Thanks for the helpful info.

At least Nicola did not hide this and emphasised they were taking it seriously and investigating. That is the right approach. Not, as I suspect some politicians would have done. pretty much ignored it as a blip. As it may be. But it is the right approach not to assume so.

Yeah I fully agree. Still, a dissapointing and somewhat concerning end to what's been a fairly positive week for Scotland. The figures for the next week or so will be interesting. At first when I seen the figure of 18 announced I was expecting a comment regarding a lot of those cases being catch up or delayed results, but obviously that explanation wasn't forthcoming and its clear these are 18 new cases.

It was a totally misleading headline. The 68% with antibodies was in one very small area in NY. It was also not a random sample, I think it was either people who had previously tested positive for the virus, or at least thought they had it.

I'd like to see stats to support any claim of increased suicide levels, as sadly stuff like that happens pretty regularly anyway. I'm from Urmston/stretford, and it felt like there was always news about some poor soul throwing themselves in front of a train when I was growing up.

Not too sure about that, the articles I read didn't mention anything about only testing people who thought they may have had it. Said it was random testing at health clinics and specially said that there may be areas of NY who are not far off herd immunity.

The suicide levels were way too high anyway, very sadly.

I did a quick search and there are a few articles claiming suicide attempts have risen but I’m not sure how reliable the info is.

England hospital deaths today 22. 6 from yesterday and 8 from the north west.

Last Friday it was 38 with 6 from the previous day and 8 of the 38 from the NW.

5 of the 6 who died yesterday were from the NW. Which is a little concerning.

But this is the lowest Friday total from English hospitals as far as I recall.

This thing isn't going away. Within a few days, two pubs, a restaurant and a shop in our town have had to close and undertake a deep clean because of a customer testing positive. I shall continue as is and only go out for essential items
I went shopping this morning and for the first time since March both traffic and pedestrian numbers were back to typical Friday pre-lockdown levels, but only about 1 in 10 wearing masks and mixed compliance with social distancing.

The add ons:

8 added to 8 July so two day total is 12 and 4 of the last 5 days have been that.

4 added to 7 July which has a three day total of 16 (third total below 20 for this stage in last 4 days)

1 added to 6 July which has a four day total of 23.

0 added to 5 July which has a 5 day total of 19. and the last 3 (and 4 out of the last 5) five day totals are now below 20.

The six day total for 4 July is 20. The week long total for 3 July is still 16 - as still is 1 July.

The England hospital death numbers are certainly positive I would say.

Wales data 0 deaths. That is the second time on a midweek day this week. And very positive news..

10 new cases.

They also report they believe they have contained the meat plant outbreaks.

Last Friday it was 2 deaths and 26 new cases.

N Ireland 0 deaths too and 4 new cases.

So again we have 0 deaths in Scotland, Wales and Nortern Ireland on the same day. And a low 22 for England. Which is the UK hospital total.

Very good news.

Last Friday it was 43.
