Anyhow off for the night. Will post what I can over next few days but not as much or as often and data will be less than usual with only England promising data every day and Scotland missing several days at a time in next 10 days

Like me take a break from the stress to enjoy what you can of Christmas and make it as happy and as safe as you possibly can.

But do take care if meeting elderly or otherwise vulnerable younger friends and relatives and having a few bevvies with the mince pies as that is when you both might forget why it matters to - as they used to say on Hill Street Blues - be careful out there.

A Boxing Day hangover is bad enough but transient. Do not accidentally create a new year that you will live with forever in regret.

Happy Christmas all.
Take care. X

New Zealand
Population 1/2 the size of London, and detached from most of the worlds by thousands of miles, they don't have a significant military involved around the world, nor do they "major" in the gas, oil, or chemical industries worldwide. They're also not a major hub for international aviation, connecting different parts of the globe.

So?
Its a Pandemic.
If you're an island you close your borders and oroperly quarantine anyone who comes from abroad.
What do New Zealand do and,Taiwan have in common?
They closed their borders.

Whilst agree it seems a simple thing to do look at the fuss that people have kicked about not being able to fly somewhere on a holiday without going into quarantine which I suspect most people have ignored. Why on earth people still insist on their week in the sun during a pandemic is beyond me. Had we have closed the borders which we should have done then we would have had all manner of issues which we wouldn’t have had the manpower to handle. Even now people in tier four areas are flying abroad for Xmas breaks, total lack of self awareness.

That wouldn't have been a problem if we shut the airports.
When the outbreak first happened here, if they said you have 10 days to either get back here from abroad or go abroad if needed and shut the borders until further notice, people wouldn't have had the option.

Been saying for months that every country - not just ours - should’ve closed their borders and grounded all passenger flights when this first reared its head. Why we (or the vast majority of other countries) didn’t do that when you consider the damage this virus has since caused globally is something I’m struggling to fathom. Maybe they thought it would be like the SARS outbreak and it would die out before it went global? Or that when it got over here or elsewhere it could be contained a lot more than it has? I know hindsight is a wonderful thing but there are people far better qualified than us on here who would’ve been well aware of the risk before us, and taking the nuclear option way back then wouldn’t have eradicated it but would’ve bought the world a lot more time and no doubt drastically reduced the number of deaths IMO.

Ah hindsights a funny thing!

A further 39,036 coronavirus cases were confirmed in the UK on Christmas Eve - the second highest daily total to date, according to government figures.

The figure brought the total number of confirmed cases since the pandemic began to 2,188,587.

Another 574 deaths were confirmed on Christmas Eve - bringing the total in the UK to 69,625 since the pandemic began.

Bloody hell
Those numbers were all from yesterday not today.

But today so far is worse sadly. I was trying to decide whether to post given that it's Christmas but I will,~

England hospital deaths only news out as yet from the past 24 hours (many countries not properly reporting this weekend) but these England numbers are 401.

That is up from 317 last Friday and from the 350 yesterday that was part of the number cited by Kaz above from yesterday's total.

Another big jump and some of the highest death figures since April which include 21 December - this Monday - already topping the number of deaths we had at the peak of wave 2 a month ago after just 4 days of data.

It is already at 335 and counting.

Sadly December 23 also added 195 deaths today to the 46 recorded for them yesterday so is now the second highest two day number after the 21st. So this new wave is escalating as we sit out of lockdown to enjoy Christmas.

The last time we saw these numbers were in the third week of April. And deaths lag cases by 3 weeks or so and as a result of this dithering and delay hundreds more a day will be dying throughout January and if we are not careful it will be too late to stem the tide from topping the 1100 or so each day in the first wave. We are looking at 500+ England only hospital deaths by New Years Day already.

Someone out there might wake up by then. Way too late as usual. But do not be shocked at a full lockdown for England announcement as early as tomorrow.

I think it is necessary to report these numbers Christmas or not as the virus sure does not care.

Scotland are not reporting deaths today and only inform us that they had 1165 cases - at 4.3% positive.

These are better numbers (down a bit from yesterday) but all we are going to get from them each day until Tuesday I think.

So far nothing at all from N Ireland or Wales.

If there is more I will post it.

We should get UK cases . But the deaths will likely be incomplete for many of the coming days.
