COVID-19 — Coronavirus

The 8 England hospital deaths today were aged between 61 and 91 and all had known underlying conditions.

This is a genuine question. How many 60+ year olds don't have some kind of underlying health issue? What's classed as underlying health issue in the way it's always written about with regards to Covid?

Regional scoreboard shows falls in all but one area.

London 393 - down from 416

Midlands 357 - down from 416

Yorkshire 418 - up from 387.

And North West down a bit from 876 to the second highest ever number at 800.

Bottom line good day - a big fall despite the small fall in the national case numbers.

From 422 to 337. Even lower than two days ago and the lowest GM % of the NW numbers today in a while.

Sadly for anyone in Stockport my fears noted the past day or two about here seem to have come to fruition. Had a very bad day today by its usually impeccable standards and will have lost ground everywhere and likely some of its status at top.

It may be the overspill from Tameside leaking across the border as I suggested - much like Wigan seems to have had problems since Bolton went nuclear.

Shows how hard it is if we do (hopefully not) end up in a new full regional lockdown not for it to be GM wide rather than base it on how things are going borough by borough at that point in time.

GM wide the only two boroughs NOT to have decreases today are the two up to now best and first out of the restrictions - Wigan and Stockport. Rather emphasising my concern on how hard it is to stop a county wide spread in an urban area where boundaries are fairly meaningless.

Thank you for you kind words.
Historical analysis of March/April Covid-19 tests says the numbers that tested positive were less than 10% of the total due to the limited number of tests available at the time. Surveys seem to indicate that that we are currently finding 50-60% of the actual case total, so we are along way on from the dark days.
For the record the only numbers that matter are hospital admissions and the numbers that get admitted to ICU. The former number has plummeted by around 70% (compared with the presumed number of actual cases) since March/April and now the NHS has a process to follow the latter thas dropped by 80% as treatment are much improved.
It would appear that although you can get Covid wearing a mask it would appear thar wearing one dramatically reduces the viral load you take on which means your immune system is more likely to fight off virus without you needing hospitalisation. I will present recant papers on this in due course.

Thanks, Blue! Nice to have a bit of insight added to the discussion re the more recent sets of data.

GM scoreboard:

Bolton 96 - down from 109 but still obviously stratospheric numbers. 986 in month (no need to say but a new record). 551 past week (again new record - this time easily for all GM). 205 over 2 days (was 204 - so new record - you get the story here). Pop score up 33 to 1093. Got from 993 to there in 3 days after taking 5 days to get from 893 to 993 and 7 days to get from 793 to 893. And over a month to get there from 693. This illustrates how fast Bolton has escalated.

Bury 20 - down significantly from 32. 341 in month. 153 past week. 52 over 2 days (was 51). Pop score up 10 to 942.

Manchester 54 - down from 68 but still more than double its 'resting' level. 1152 in month. 409 past week (new record here). Pop score up 10 to 887.

Oldham 27 - down significantly from 44 to nearly beat Stockport! 645 in month. 203 past week. Generally better here comparatively. 71 over 2 days (was 94). Pop score up 12 to 1361 - got above Blackburn who has has two bad days on the run.

Rochdale 17 - big drop from 29. to second best GM score today. 451 in month. 182 past week. Pop score up 8 to 1108.

Salford 32 - down from 38 but still running hot here with 4 days on the trot in the 30s. 407 in month. This number has escalated a lot in past few weeks. 218 past week (more than half monthly total). 70 over 2 days (was 69). Pop score up 13 to 828.

Stockport 25 - big jump up and third straight rise from 15 then 17 to worst number in three weeks and only beaten by a one off 26 when there was a local outbreak quickly shut off. In context just two months ago Stockport got 27 as a total in 14 days. 242 in month (highest yet here but retains the GM record) - which in GM has doubled in size in just a few weeks to be 'low' enough to claim. 117 past week. (New high here). 42 over 2 days (was 32) (another unwanted record). Pop score up 9 (highest daily jump here in weeks) to 729.

Tameside 26 - big drop from 44 but the local outbreak has racked up big numbers lately. 462 in month (new record). 217 past week (record). 70 over 2 days (was 82). Pop score up 11 to 986. At risk of being the fourth GM borough into the 1000 club if it has a bad day tomorrow.

Trafford 12 - down from 14. The only place really under control in GM right now by the numbers. And the only one to have had a single figure number in any day in the past week! 281 in month. Still behind Stockport but closing in on this record by looks of it. 93 past week (the best in GM and only sub 100 total). 26over 2 days (was 33). Pop score up 5 to 773.

Wigan 23 - down from 27. 269 in month. Closed the gap on Stockport here today. 133 past week. (highest ever here). 50 over 2 days (was 46). Pop score up 7 to 764 so also made up ground on Stockport here.

Warrington was single figures every week around 3 weeks ago. 169 last week! Exploding here currently. 10% of all cases here since the outset were in the last week!
