You're simply clueless about what his work actually showed.

The main real criticisms of the paper that prompted lock down were that it underestimated the rate of spread, the precise opposite of what you somehow have come to believe. (They based R on early Chinese data rather than fitting the emerging European data)

So if you actually had a clue, you'd be after him for being too optimistic. But that's just too inconvenient a truth to acknowledge.

Maybe the reason for the increase in infections is because people have begun to mix again in large numbers as they think the vaccine will sort us out. It’s definitely a seasonal virus to an extent where cases were always going to rise come winter with people inside most of the time, it will be interesting to see the full results of this new variant and actually how more transmissible it is.

There are some crumbs of comfort at the moment...
For example the weekly death toll (latest data 11 Dec) was 12.2K vs the 5 year average of 10.7K deaths for that same week of the year. At the peak in April there were 22K deaths per week vs the 10K figure for the 5 year average. So basically although the case numbers are high, the resulting deaths are not (fortunately).
Keep your hopes up, there will be millions more vaccinated over the next 2 months.
