COVID-19 — Coronavirus

It's a huge and complex logistical exercise. I imagine some people would be very quick to whinge about incompetence if they cut corners and the vaccine, staff or invitees to be vaccinated aren't all in the right place at the right time in every single location.
i understand that, but surely you must accept that they have had literally mths to prepare for this day?? Its not as if the anoucement yesterday would have been a surprise would it?

They could be, and along with, medical students and retired medical staff would be used if we had to use the Nightingales. The hope is we won't though. I'm no supporter of how the government have handled this, but like any insurance policy, it's better not to use it. At least in the case of Nightingales they took the policy out.
Think certain Nightingales have been used for particular purposes and the one in East London will likely be pressed into action to serve COVID patients, probably next week. Others will presumably follow. Staffing, however, is a greater concern.

Not sure why the vaccine is approved and we have to wait 5 days to start rolling it out? Ok its NYs day and a weekend. But a delay of 5 days is likley to result in thousands of deaths in a few weeks time. Surely this should be 24/7 day operation. As a country we should have been preparing for this day for months. There must be thousands of qualified and experienced people who are not currently working on the frontline in the NHS with not much else to do at present that could have been utilised to start vaccinating people and these are certainly thousands of premesis's that could be utilised to vaccinate people. You could pay pub and restaurant owners for a start? Doesnt seem to be an awful lot of urgency.
I understand that the Country has been preparing for months but there are complexities in manufacture and distribution.

There would need to be sufficient supply to justify 24/7 vaccinations. Also, how are you volunteering to help with this btw? It’s not just people with clinical skills. Old and vulnerable people probably need transport to vaccination centres in the middle of the night under your suggestion. Some of the GP Practices will be on the edge of tough estates (mine is) so volunteer stewards / security would no doubt be welcome.

I'm no fan of the govt at all. They've consistently got pretty much everything wrong in my view but deploying millions of vaccines isn't easy.

Firstly the vaccines have to be shipped to the medical centres. Maybe certain types of transport are needed and how to do load 1 million bottles onto trucks - you need space to physically hold the trucks and people. Next I assume there will be some training given, then the NHS have to call people to get them to come in. People have to accept the invitation. We also need to make sure there's the transport infrastructure in place as well as the space to keep people socially distanced. Plus what about disposing 1 million bottles, 1 million needles and the PPE?

It's not that easy.

There's still a heck of a lot of work to do involving a lot of people in a short space of time.

I think we should be thankful it is happening as quickly as it is, especially at a time when a lot of people are already very busy vaccinating the most vulnerable.

BTW, I mean let's be thankful for the hard working professionals involved with developing and rolling out the vaccinations, not the politicians

Has anyone heard how @tolmie's hairdoo is doing? Not been through every thread but he's usually an active poster but was suffering with Covid a few days ago. He stated he's only 48, if you see this Tolmie hope you are ok.

I'm still suffering quite a bit mate, not slept for six nights and temps still up and down, which is just energy sapping.

I'm 12 days in and must continue to self isolate until symptoms have gone for 48 hours.

My coughing is a lot better but the Codeine Linctus the docs recommended makes me right off and unsteady on my feet.

I feel like I have aged 20 years in two weeks but I'm 46, not 48 ;)

Thanks to everyone for their kind messages.

I have literally turned my phone off for days.

Glad you're on the mend mate!

It looks like the only constraint on numbers being vaccinated initially will be supply of the vaccine. Once that is fully up to speed by mid January then Astra Zeneca reckon they can produce two million doses a week. I would hope that number would increase and I'd expect the vaccination programme to more or less deliver at the same speed as supply. There is absolutely no excuse if huge numbers aren't getting a shot each week in my view.

Yeah, it’s not as simple as it sounds. It’s also a red herring to suggest they’re not rolling it out because of the bank holiday because people were even getting the Pfizer jab on Christmas Day
