This is the problem. The 'debate' such as it is seems to be polarising around the two opposite positions of it being not even as bad as flu on one hand, and zombie apocalypse on the other. I personally think the truth lurks somewhere between the two, but more moderate voices tend to be drowned out by the apocalyptic headlines. In this age of collapsing printed media sales and a crowded online news scene everything needs to be sensational just to be noticed - it only seems like a few days since coastal communities were about to be swept into the sea and 1000's of homes lost to flooding. Now there is another headline generator this is forgotten. Every time it's windy and pisses it down we have to give a bit of fairly standard seasonal weather a stupid name and proclaim the collapse of civilisation.
