Schools, colleges and universities will remain open while those who cannot work from home, such as construction or manufacturing workers, will be encouraged to continue going to their workplaces.

England will enter a month-long lockdown from Thursday, Boris Johnson has announced.Mr Johnson warned of a greater number of COVID-19 deaths this winter than during the first wave of the pandemic, in the spring, without tougher measures.

Until 2 December, people in England will only be allowed to leave their homes for specific reasons, such as education, work or food shopping.

Pubs, bars and restaurants will close across the country, although they will be able to offer takeaway and delivery services.

Non-essential shops, hairdressers and leisure and entertainment venues will also be shut.

The prime minister said the furlough scheme, which has seen the government pay a proportion of peoples' wages during the COVID-19 crisis but was due to end on Saturday, would now be extended through November.

Different households will be banned from mixing, although support bubbles and childcare bubbles will remain and children will still be able to move between homes if their parents are separated.

Gyms will be shut but people can continue to exercise for unlimited periods outdoors, either with people from their own households or on a one-to-one basis with one person from another household.

People will be able to travel internationally for work, but won't be allowed to go abroad for holidays.

Premier League football and other elite sports will be allowed to continue, due to the testing regimes in place for professional sportspeople, but amateur sports will be put on hold.

Briefing

Any bars and restaurants i've been in recently have all be made very safe, i feel for all them staff.

Supermarkets are a fucking nitemare, zero social distancing.
Most gyms, coffee shops, pubs, restaurants... all safer than supermarkets for sanitising and distancing. And are much much much safer than schools!

All comes down to an effective vaccine/treatment being found. We manage that we get on top of it. Until then it's a gonna be a shitshow.
Sounds like we - and other countries - are desperately buying time and waiting for that to happen. There did seem to be some positive news on that front during the press conference with hints that a vaccine isn’t too far off

Under the four week lockdown, can me and my four year old son still visit my 77 year old single (and invalid) mum, as her support bubble? Or are supposed to leave her to decline even more like the spring one she spent alone did?

She lives in a goldfish bowl of a cul-de-sac and based on the glares I get from her neighbours (who never ever check on her) whenever I go - they clearly do not grasp what a bubble is and think I'm breaking grtmanc rules - I expect the police to turn up one day :(

Support bubbles to continue

A single person can visit a vulnerable person for care

I believe you can visit one person you are caring for.

I wonder if Healdplace has had the 'phone call yet to head up the statistics team?

Why did no one ask who produced the reasonable worst case scenario curve, how much did it cost and why did they get it so wrong?

But it wouldn’t have needed 9 months, 1-2 would have done if done properly, look at NZ.
These half arsed measures have done nothing but drag it out and crippled businesses across the country.
As a country we couldn’t even do a half arsed (as you call it) lockdown earlier this year. Can’t compare the UK to NZ, it’s a ridiculous comparison. Why not Germany or France who have just gone into lockdowns or Belgium? We should have had a harsh 10 week lockdown to start with but there was not a cat in hells chance of this country following rules so the government have tried to rest people like adults but seen it thrown back in their faces. Watch the news the next few days with people having parties etc spreading the virus around like twats. If we hadn’t been such selfish wankers to start with things may have been easier but that’s not the way of the oxygen thieves in this country is it

Boris said you should remain in your local area. Anyone any idea what that means? We collect our Grandson from school for our daughter and she lives 16 miles away.
