How many beds were used in the first surge?
Zero. They werent required (then) because ... we had a successful adhered to lockdown. With no travel abroad incoming/outgoing. The chance was missed and the general public got lax as the numbers dwindled to 100s

So the government built something they had no real idea about.
I know it's a pandemic etc but, because of that, I think most expected them to be used.

They built ‘insurance’, if ‘most’ can’t figure that out, nor why we are now in the shit, then that’ll be why we are in the shit.

the headlines and govt spiel was driven by ‘deaths’ it should have been driven by illness and recovery numbers

Thanks I was confused as my auntie took a friend to the Wythenshawe facility to be vaccinated. My parents live much closer and are 89 and 82., I would have thought given their ages and in the area giving the vaccinations they would have been contacted by now but they haven't heard a peep.
My mum & dad are 89 & 87. Live in Bredbury and all my dad as heard is early January.

I agree with this , my father in law prime example, type 2 , over weight , no keeping fit , eats crap , too many people don’t take responsibility for there own health
I’ve been saying this throughout this pandemic. There needs to be a health revolution after covid has left us.

Far too many people get to their mid-20s to early-30s and then allow themselves to become fat, lazy, unfit, unhealthy, fat, sluggish bastards on a steady decline until they die. This puts great stress on the NHS (nearly every single mental and physical health problems can be traced back to poor diet and lack of physical fitness).

The only point is to protect everyone whose vulnerable and expected to get a vaccine, and in that case they should just be shielded
This is 10-20 million people.

It's not remotely possible. An attempt will result in hundreds of thousands dead and our healthcare overwhelmed. You need a different plan. Here's one:

1. Suppress the virus as hard as possible for a month. Like lockdown one.

2. Vaccinate, vaccinate, vaccinate.

3. Review and relax as fast as virus's spread allows.

If you don't fancy that, tier 4 everywhere instead of lock down. You'll probably end up locking down anyway, but might be able to get vaccinations ahead of the virus.

Unfortunately, most of what you highlight is rather simplistic and many of these key points have been picked at previously. One of the glaringly obvious issues is who qualifies as having an underlying health condition. There's an extensive list of who is at risk - People with co-morbidities, diabetes, high blood pressure, cancer etc. etc. I'm not going to go through every underlying health condition as the list is pretty hefty.

In the year to November 2019, 62.3% of adults (people aged 18 and over) were overweight or obese. Diabetes.org states there are 3.5 million diagnosed with diabetes. High blood pressure affects one in four (Gov UK, 2015). 360,000 are diagnosed with cancer each year (Macmillan, 2016), etc. and that's before we even go into people who are classified as "clinically extremely vulnerable" and received letters in the post telling them to stay home. It soon works out that you're looking at over half the population falling into these categories.

I'd also add the behavioural aspect to what you propose. You're counting on the overwhelming majority of the population to effectively accept that we all get sick to some degree. Is the majority of the population willing to go back to work, send kids into school and pack the restaurants and cafes if they know this virus is circulating? Just because a government mandates something doesn't necessarily mean people will follow.

It might've worked had we not known this virus existed at all. However, I'm not entirely sure it would go down well if a virus was out there and people in office covered it up to keep everything normal.
They already are, hence why you're all whinging for a lockdown. If they'd behaved and stayed at home, we wouldn't have this issue.

They’re just repeating the same process over and over... what’s a 3rd/4th lockdown going to do when we’ve already seen what happens when it ends. It’s gonna take months to vaccinate those who need it. This is just a shambles

I do understand why they were built but, considering none have been used as yet (including zero beds) and we have NHS staff seemingly now telling admitted patients without Covid that they are "safer at home" then it seems like they were a PR exercise to me, with no contingency or emergency planning playing any part whatsoever.
I GET the need for them, I'm just failing to see any real utilisation or thinking outside the box.
Maybe you are privy to that info, in which case I'll give you the floor..... ;-)

I agree I been one of them people it’s so easy to be done and hard to get out of

I too let myself go too far at one point. I’ve got myself about half way back to being as fit as I was when I was a PT.

But we need that revolution across the entire country.

That is awesome if you and shows that the help is there

It’s shocking how bad general fitness levels are in this country.
It was all set up by our local church which I attend at one point we was doing it 6 days a week, going to the supermarkets on a night getting as much stuff as we can

then collecting Food from people who wanted to donate, the town really came together
