Mrs Q and I are due Covid booster/flu jab Sept/Oct(?). However we are off to New Zealand in a few weeks time in the middle of their winter. Is there any way we can get the jabs ahead of time? We are both over 70 but under 75.

You can ask your GP. It seems a reasonable request and they are struggling to get the last remaining over 75s to have it so there must be spare supply.

You would get one in September anyway so I see no reason in these circumstances to say no if like me it is now 8 months since your last one - being over 70 but not qualifying for the fourth jab by age.

Cases here are going up fast now. Just as we stop recording most numbers.

But England hospital patients over the weekend are up from 9329 Friday to 10,658 today - which is up 2836 in the past 7 days - over a third in the week.

That is the highest level in 10 weeks so gives reasonable cause for you to ask at least imo, Regardless of the levels likely in New Zealand. Just for your own health reasons.

GP not interested, jab line say ‘sorry rules say…’

It was worth asking but seems silly to just have to bin vaccines they cannot get people to have if those reports are true.

By the time you go things will likely have gone down anyway, This wave is probably close to its peak now and if you have a few weeks before you travel maybe better to catch it before then and recover anyway.

But if they announce the autumn programme - believed to be aimed at 65 and over this year I gather and Omicron specific - then be prepared to ask to be prioritised before you go, They might start this as early as August along with the flu jabs.

I'm surprised considering the current high transmission of the COVID virus the there hasn't been a bigger push for a forth vaccination scheme.

Type your postcode into this website to find your nearest walk in centre. Turn up and explain your circumstances and there’s a pretty good chance they’ll bung you a couple of vaccinations. Don’t go anywhere near a GP surgery though….
