1 year to the day... Sergio’s last PL goal.
A whole year with zero Aguero league goals :(
Just been looking at ages of established first rank strikers on the European scene. Luis Suarez is 33. He's having a very good season with Atletico. Cristiano Ronaldo is 35. Having a good season in what is admittedly a weak league. Athletically speaking, Ronaldo is a freak of nature, it has to be said. He's taken incredibly good care of his body. Lewandowski, still a major force in the Bundesliga, is 32.
Well, Sergio is 32, so he compares decently with all of those. But he's been plagued by injuries, frankly. I've never researched this methodically, but I have a clear memory of him being virtually uninjured throughout the 2011-12 season, and then chunks of nearly every other season out. Four weeks, six weeks, eight weeks. Tell me if I'm mistaken. And now this. He
could go on at top level for another couple of seasons. But even if he does come back for, say, a third of this season (and it always takes him a few games to get up to full speed), the club
has to be looking, as of now, at another striker this summer. I'm incredibly sad about it. I
hate seeing the greatest striker we've ever had fading like this, and I hope to god that I'm wrong. But given our commitments, as a club that now
expects to be deep into four trophies most, if not every, season, it's now imperative that we get someone. Gaby is just not the same kind of attacker as Sergio, he never will be, and it's no good beating him with that stick. He has another role.
It could be argued that KDB has had long injury lay-offs. But incredible as it seems to say about probably our best player, we
can actually do without him for reasonable periods, and we proved that spectacularly in 2018-19. Weirdly, I'm far less worried about him being out for four weeks at present than I am about us having to do without Sergio for the same period.
