I remember a previous rare win in Pakistan. England batting fourth in fading light. Pakistan doing everything possible to get a draw: slow over rate, multiple field changes and so on. As England approached the winning line, Pakistan appealed against the light! “It’s dangerous for our fielders” they cried. Umpires: “Well you shouldn’t have wasted so much time then. Get on with it.”
England hit the winning runs in near darkness.

I remember one of the newspapers the following day just had solid black boxes instead of pictures in its match report but with proper captions underneath. Things like 'Hussain glides the ball off his pads for a 4', 'the Pakistan fielders complain to the umpire about the light'. Very funny.

A highpoint in English cricket history. Astounding.

it's a very big result, even though Pakistan have been left behind in test cricket on home soil for a long time, they still have very good players and their fans on home soil are still crazy in love for test cricket,

I did feel the England bowling line up was short and lacking pace with Anderson and Robinson, that's why I thought the declaration was a wrong choice at the time, but stokes bent his back and Anderson and Robinson bowling bouncers even Joe root did a couple hahaha.

the real winners are the fans, it's so good to play Pakistan on their home pitches, we need places like touring to Pakistan, you learn so much about all parts of cricket from batting to bowling and playing under pressure, the fans' noise is incredible and fielding all day in the heat is a very big mental test.

I think it was Steve Bucknor and nasser hussain batting in the dark

Pakistan must wonder what the fuck hit them, they will be fearful going into the next test. Will they try and slow it all down or meet fire with fire?

What it does as well is teams won’t give us a gettable score in the final innings to win knowing how we play

Agree totally, it was great to see us tour Pakistan again (and get a fantastic welcome in Rawalpindi according to the Barmy Army).

Brilliant leadership from Stokes and our bowling attack were relentless. The rate we scored with on day 1 gave us the time to win this cliff hanger. It was a great Test Match and credit to Pakistan for the part they played in the game.

Shoutout to my homies in Rawalpindi for showing up in great numbers throughout the match and appreciating good cricket from both sides, winning and losing is part of the game but keeping test cricket alive is of prime importance for the future of the game and it will only remain alive if cricket isn't just confined to few countries. State of pitches is a concern but one can't ignore the fact that Pakistan was deprived of international level cricket for a decade and doesn't have the amount of resources that india, eng or Australia has but things will get better with time. Hopefully, Pakistan will bounce back strongly in the next game.

I also want to propose a change to the idiom "Aging like fine wine, it should be Aging like jimmy Anderson" he's one of the last stars from his generation and should be celebrated every time he takes the field

Staggering how Jimmy keeps going. I've never done it, but I imagine fast bowling is very punishing on the body, even for someone in their early twenties. Jimmy turned 40 during the summer. An amazing athlete.

He's an elite level sportsman and for me elite sportsmen are a class above worldclass and that's why Jimmy is so special, i don't think we,ll ever see such a dedicated fast bowler again. The present or new generation of fast bowlers aren't dedicated enough, it will be an achievement if any bowler from present generation goes on to play 100 test
