Re. India and the Aussies. In September 2005, shortly after the epic Ashes win, this article was published in the London Review of Books (Runciman writes regularly on cricket, football and British politics). Not everyone will agree with the points made in it — it's one man's opinion — far from it, but I found it very thought-provoking.
Hope the link works. I tried taking a screen shot of it, but that didn't seem to work.

Thanks for posting. He makes some interesting points but a lot of it is absolute nonesense. From an economic point of view, England and India are the Suoerpowers. Yes the IPL raises vast amounts of cash, but that is going into players and Franchise owners pockets. England is the only place where the stadiums are full for all 3 formats of the game, at international level, regardless of the opposition. Tes, the aussies might get a shit load of people for the opening day of the boxing day test, but that crowd soon dwindles. The only time the Aussies are guaranteed a sell out is when the barmy army roll into town.
From a playing cultural and playing perspective, the Ashes is still the most important battle. I have never heard an Australian or English person start talking about a series with India, 2 years in advance.
The difference between the 3 countries is that Cricket is the most important sport in India and Australia, where as Football is the dominating sport over here.
Make no mistake though, the English are at the forefront of cricket and will play a major part in shaping the games future.

Interesting isn't it that Jimmy Anderson was MOTM for the final match that won that series? And he's still here, eight years on! A prodigy of nature.
Jimmy has been unbelievable. There was also an interesting reference to “the debutant”’ Joe Root. Joe will become England’s highest scoring batsman (in time), with Jimmy extending his record England wicket haul for another couple of years, I reckon

As others have said 2012. Heard a stat the other week that of their last 32 they've won 28 drawn 3 and lost 1. So yes tough ask.

i think it will be a hard ask but england have a chance ? if stones and archer can play then its game on
yes the pitches will suit spin but if you can but your back into bowling then the wicket can suit fast bowling as well with uneven bounce and keeping low

but the big big thing for me is can england put runs on the board ? yes root can play spin. but if he goes cheaply then 4 or 5 can follow pretty quick. i would like us to score quick runs and don't sit in defending ? its better to score 250 to 300 playing your shots than just sitting around and all out for 150

lets hope india are still partying after that great win in australia and forgot to prepare proper and england catch them cold in the first test ? i know its a big HOPE hahahah

I need to get a grip you sound more positive than me ;-)
I suppose my pessimism is rooted in the fact I turned 52 last week and in the time I've been following the game we've won there twice. You are right there's a lot to like about this team and Stokes can change a game with bat and ball. The openers and the spinners are the worry for me but right now I've got other selection issues on my mind. Mahrez is in the territory of needing a score and must be testing the patience of the selectors....
