Hardly a surprise that Vaughan backs a Yorkshire player, but he has a point in saying that Ballance deserves a shot at 4/5 rather than 3. He's been getting his runs at 4/5 for Yorkshire and the Lions and then gets pushed up to 3 where he's failed for England before. Root obviously doesn't want to go up to 3 and Ballance isn't suited for that role either.
It's quite interesting that Hussain wants a counter-attacking player like Root to go to 3, so that England can immediately take the game to the opponent when they've lost an opener, while Vaughan wants a less flamboyant and more dogged player to come in at 3 and drop anchor. For Vaughan, England simply have too many 'crackerjack' players and are missing someone who will stay the distance and wait for the bowlers to tire.
Will be fascinating to see how the selectors react to the challenge, even with Ballance out through injury.
