This is not the Australia of Hayden, Gilchrist, Langer, Ponting, Warne. This is a pretty average Australian team by their standards.
The gulf between England in the one-day game and the five-day one has now become a yawning abyss. This may well be one of the very worst English test sides in my lifetime.
 
Thinking of a new coach for England think we have to go for an Aussie and it’s Jason Gillespie and let him pick the people he needs around him. If he would want the job is another matter!
 
This result has been coming for a while. Just seen a stat that 'extras' was our 3rd highest run scorer in 2021 and they weren't too many behind Burns in 2nd. Time for a total rethink of Test cricket in this country but that won't happen as it would cost money. And sadly there's no money in the format in England. I've no doubt there'll be plenty for the hundred again in the summer though.
 
I don’t blame root he is a one man team at this point. Players like stokes, butler, bairstow get the blame in my eyes. senior players who have let the side down. Especially stokes the most overrated player I can remember he averages 36 and hasn’t had a big score since 2019 yet is lauded as some world class all rounder. He is barely better than woakes with the bat.

Root has scored 1708 runs for England in 2021 the next best is burns with 530. How anyone can blame him is beyond me. Yes he may not be the best tactician but he has been let down time and time again. Get rid of silverwood, get a coach who can help mentor root with field placements etc, get a proper group of selectors involved and get rid of the same names failing over and over again.

We lost heavily in Australia with cook as captain so this is nothing new. We must build towards the next home ashes and win the bloody thing back
 
Who can be our captain if Root steps down as captain? Can’t think of one we know they will give it Stokes! Maybe give it to Anderson now till he retires.

Personally don’t want to take the risk losing his runs by stripping him of captaincy. He has led us to wins in Sri Lanka and south africa recently as well as home wins against Pakistan and West Indies. He is not the problem imo

its all about the top order for me, they are just not giving the middle order anything to work with, you just can't be 20/30 for 2 or 3 each innings and expect root down to buttler to pull you out of the shit, it just won't happen, every batsmen is under the pump all the time and against the class that the aussies possess you have no chance. its a certain 5-0. if you get a 100 opening partnership you are in the game and the 300 plus scores follow, but they are just not good enough. and its all down to the focus on white ball(and the money) during the summer in england

Yep it starts at the top at this level and we have literally given the middle order nothing to work with.

Agree with this.

To the posters asking for root to resign as captain would it really have made a difference if we had a different captain? We still can’t bat we didn’t lose this series because of poor captaincy we lost because aside from root and maybe malan we can’t bat in this format.
 
ECB. Embarrassing Cricket Board. Poor management and coaches making average county batsmen even worse. Only Root is Test standard with the bat and he’s a poor captain.

The attitude and fielding have been poor too. Absolutely rubbish.
